- Two Bills of Sales for Slaves and
Two Bills of Sales for Slaves and Later Notes and Photographs A view of slavery and the relationships between these social groups before and after the Civil War. The group includes a sale document for two slaves 7.5 x 12.5 in. partially printed Savannah GA 7 April 1807. For one man named Jack and one woman named Cumbo (?) to Samuel Sturges for 600 dollars. With wax and paper seal. Plus a Ms document 1p Burke County GA 20 Oct. 1806 for the sale of one slave "Boston " to Samuel Sturges.Also included are several notes that clearly illustrate the familial connections between classes. These groups were more dependent on each other than most would admit - the upper classes "needed" the help the "help" needed jobs. Bonds of respect and congeniality did develop and familial titles ("mama " "aunt " etc.) were used.Letter 2pp 7 x 10 in. dated 28 Feb. 1946 n.p. stated but postmark on cover from Waynesboro GA. With cover on which there are pencil notes indicating the letter is from Liza Jones Servant to family all life - born a slave. In the letter Miss Jones reminisces complaining a bit about getting old: I am not much my self. Just to think I served you and yours nearly 40 years. Signed E.H.J.Plus a short note 5.5 x 6.5 in. with birthday greeting and Theas flowers came out of your yard. Eliza.Short note [original spelling retained] Dear Baby Wishing you Miny Happy years and a long life sweet and plesant is the wishes of your old black mama Eliza. With 2.5 x 3.5 photo. Second later note dated 1967 short reply to a letter received "From Lillie to Mrs. Mary." One photo included based on age photo is more likely Lillie than Eliza.Five silver gelatin images of African Americans picking cotton 3 x 5.5 in. Probably early 1900s. Three white men in center what is clearly their horse-drawn buggy in background. Mule-drawn wagon loaded over the top of the boards with bags of cotton.Five images of African American nannies with their charges. Approx. 3.25 x 5.25 in. Most dated 1923-1925. One with "Liza" & Henry Jr. Spring 1925. Roosevelt in the background.One image of two women one black one white with penciled "Aunt Rosa" on verso.Plus 9.5 x 13.5 in. chromolithographed image of two African American children in grain field with title If a body meet a body coming thro' de Rye. The broadside has a die-cut Christmas card and a "Baby Roll" membership certificate affixed to verso. Baby Roll dated 2 Feb. 1899 Woman's home Mission Society M.E. Church South Georgia Conference.

(MARYLAND: AFRICAN-AMERICANS) Two accomplished pencil sketches of domestic activities near Baltimore, early 20th Century attributed to "Sallie" (reported to have been a slave) and inscribed on the mats, "Stemer's Run 1904". One depicts an African American boy tending a cauldron in a farmyard; the other an elderly African-American woman seated in a kitchen.

Anderson his heirs & assigns forever and against any claim or claims whatever.

This was the general receiving Prison for all prisoners of war and more than 100 000 have been confined within its walls. It is viewed as quite an object of curiosity by strangers visiting the City. Independence on visiting Martinique, dated march 14, 1843. Framed between two glass panes in gilt wood frame. Offered with and old typed on a typewriter transcript of the document, ca. 1930's.

1860 GEORGIA LAND DOCUMENT, CONFEDERATE SOLDIERSurveyor's document with a 490-acre "land lot" won by Georgia Land Lottery in 1819. Land was (is) located along the Satilla River (a contraction of "Big St. Illa," presumably). Signed by the surveyor general in 1860, A.J. Boggess, whose local clato fame was carrying Captain Archibald Burke and other wounded soldiers from the field in the first battle of Bull Run. The 41st Georgia Infantry Regiment renamed Company G "Boggess Avengers" in his honor. Document measures about 13" x 7-3/4". Semages. Some water staining. This item can be shipped in-house.
