Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) "Common Goldeneye": Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Common Goldeneye" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor painting on Paper. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was originally published on a First Day Cover for a Russia Duck stamp issued July 1, 1990. . . Like the Mallard, the hardy Common Goldeneye winters as far north as possible, usually on coastal bays, large lakes, impoundments and rivers. In fact, where waters stay icefree, many Goldeneyes never migrate at all. Where natural hot springs and geysers are present, for example, flocks stay year round, wintering on stretches of river kept open by warm water. When forced to migrate by extremely cold temperatures, the Goldeneye begins its journey in late fall, flying in small, fast flocks that are often identified by the whistling of rapidly beating wings. This distinctive sound gives rise to the bird's widespread nickname, the Whistler. In the spring, these ducks arrive early at their breeding grounds, appearing with the first openings in the ice of preferred lakes and streams. While searching for nest sites, Goldeneyes scatter across vast evergreen forests hunting for the appropriate spots to settle in for the season. A cavity in a rotten hardwood tree by a marsh usually serves as a nest. There, the hen wraps eight to twelve greenish eggs in a blanket of soft, insulating down. This lovely hen has a charcoal body, crisp white breast, belly and wing markings and a rich brown head. Even more colorful, the predominantly black and white Goldeneye drake sports bold, striking markings -- a glistening dark green head and a striking white eye patch compliment his white chest, belly and wing patches. . . Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) Crested Shelducks in Flight: Ivan Kozlov (Russian, B. 1937) "Crested Shelducks in Flight" Original Watercolor painting on Paper. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting is the original painting which appeared on the 1995 Russia Duck Conservation Stamp - Crested Shelduck issued September 1, 1995. . . The Crested Shelduck was last officially spotted in 1971. Thus, there is little hope that this bird survives today. Named for the tuft that flows from its head, the Crested Shelduck was believed to inhabit northeast Asia, but unfortunately, little is known about this unique species. Interestingly, representations of this scarce bird appear in both Chinese and Japanese works of art. In fact, these pictures indicate that as early as the 19th century this duck was already something of a curiosity and seemingly rare. Some conservationists still believe that this bird may continue to thrive in remote areas of the world. With just three documented sightings of Crested Shelducks during this century, information about breeding, habitat and voice calls is unknown. However, descriptions of the Crested Shelduck have been fairly consistent for both the adult male and female (no juveniles have been spotted). According to these sources, the drake's crown, drooping crest, upper mantle and breast are greenish-black. This species also possesses wings with white and black flight feathers interspersed with greenish-black plumes. The female's general coloring is more subdued. Its breast and body are mostly brown with gray underparts, while the hen's head has a dark green crown and a drooping crest. A distinctive white ring around each eye readily distinguishes the female from male Crested Shelducks. . . Image Size: 6. 75 x 9. 75 in. . Overall Size: 10. 75 x 13. 25 in. . Unframed. . Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) "Chinese Merganser": Ivan Kozlov (B. 1937) "Chinese Merganser - 1996 Russia Duck Conservation Presentation Cover" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor. . . Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation. . This painting was published on the 1996 USSR Conservation of Waterfowl stamp issued September 1, 1996. . . Many details concerning the Chinese Merganser remain a mystery to ornithologists. Inhabiting areas of southeastern Russia, this duck is a reluctant and poor flier. A resident bird, it remains non-migratory except in severe weather conditions, when it has been spotted in China and Korea. The Chinese Merganser is about the same size as the Red-breasted Merganser. It has a similar, but longer, dark green, spiky crest on its head. The Chinese Merganser drake is distinguished from the male Red-breasted Merganser by its plumage. Its nickname is the "Scaly Merganser" for its unique scaly pattern of black markings. The Chinese Merganser lacks the dark chest and gray body of the Red-breast. It has instead a bold white chest and belly, with black scales on its flanks. The female resembles the male with grayer scaling and a brown head and crest. The nostrils are midway on the bill of the Chinese Merganser, whereas they are close to the base of the bill on the Red-breast. The Chinese Merganser maintains the same diet as other Mergansers, feeding mostly on small fish. Known to be shy and wary, Chinese Mergansers reside in remote areas, preferring habitats near narrow, fast-flowing rivers and streams with adjacent forests. Although little is known about the breeding habits of this waterfowl, nests have been found in holes and hollows of dead, rotting trees near the water. There are no accurate estimates of the Chinese Merganser population, but the species is known to be rare. . . Image Size: 6. 75 x 8. 75 in. . Overall Size: 9 x 11. 25 in. . Unframed. . This is a massive and gorgeous gilt silver and carnelian pendant or pectoral with a braided cotton cord through the chain links. The pendant is comprised of thick panels that are decorated with curved flanges and integral loops for suspension. The triangle or tumar is worn on the chest and represents a mountain and the flanges represent curved horns from a ram. The surfaces are incised with geometric patterning and scrolling shapes. The center is bisected by a cylindrical tube or "bozben" that is also decorated with carnelians. Both ends of the tube have narrow openings, for slipping a rolled Muslim prayer scroll inside for protection. At the bottom are dangling silver bells on chains that jangle. Size: 10" L x 9. 5" W (25. 4 cm x 24. 1 cm); silver quality: 93%; weight: 450 grams. . From the Metropolitan Museum of Art's website "Turkmen Jewelry" August 2011: "Although nominally Sunni Muslim, the Turkmen kept many of their pre-Islamic customs and beliefs, which were often embodied in the jewelry they made and wore. Turkmen silver jewelry carried deep symbolic meanings and often marked an individual's passage from one stage of life to another. From a very early age, a woman started wearing jewelry whose shapes and materials were believed to ensure her ability to bear healthy children later in life. The amount of embellishments a girl wore increased as she approached marriageable age. Once she had had her first children, and her fertility had been established, the amount of jewelry she received and wore decreased. In addition, silver jewelry believed to ward off evil and illness was worn by men, women, and especially by children. . Jewelry was a significant financial investment, as it was handcrafted from precious materials. There were cases when, in times of dire need, a woman would part with her jewelry in order to help the survival of the tribe. Significant in size and weight, Turkmen jewelry objects were made of silver, decorated with semi-precious stones, and sometimes gilded for an added color effect and value. " . . Money Bags From the Teachers'' Union Ex-Chief
By Amy Argetsinger and Roxanne Roberts
The Washington Post, Monday, November 5, 2007; Page C03
One woman''s booty is another''s bargain: The ill-gotten treasure chest of former Washington Teachers'' Union president Barbara Bullock went on display Saturday in advance of this weekend''s live auction of the luxury goods.
Bullock, now serving a nine-year prison term, spent approximately $800,000 on these designer purses, furs and pricey knickknacks with money embezzled from the union. The seized items sat in an FBI warehouse until this past summer, when Stephanie Kenyon of Sloans & Kenyon in Chevy Chase sent a truck to collect them for auction, with the proceeds going back to the union. "This stuff is new, high-end, glitzy, luxury, status-symbol-type of material," she told us. "Some of the Fendi purses are really wild."
Bought with embezzled funds, now up for auction. (Courtesy of Sloan and Kenyon)
The purse-obsessed Bullock spent tens of thousands on Chanel, Hermès and Judith Leiber handbags, which are estimated to sell for $500 to $800 at auction. (That''s about a quarter of their original price; ditto for the minks and jewelry.) The top lot: a 288-piece Tiffany sterling silver flatware service (Chrysanthemum pattern) purchased for $100,000-plus and estimated to sell for $25,000 to $35,000. Too much? Well, the Buccellati sterling wine cooler is expected to bring just $3,000 to $5,000. The feds also seized electronics that will sell at another auction -- except for the TV that union officials kept for headquarters.
Absentee bidding already started on eBay; the live auction begins Saturday.

Ancient Greek Gold Necklace w/ Stoetzer Report: Ancient Greece or Central Asia, ca. 2nd century BCE to 2nd century CE. A breathtaking 82. 6 to 85. 1% gold (equivalent to ~20K) necklace comprised of a finely woven gold chain from which 7 winged figural pendants (perhaps representing Nike given that one holds a flaming torch) of nearly identical form (save hand gestures and attributes - see extended description below) and 6 elongated, fluted, piriform pendants (perhaps representing seeds or urns) with floral pendants above are suspended from a loop in lop construction chain that is further adorned by 7 equidistantly placed rosette appliques. Beyond impressive for the repousse work, chasing, and stamping of the pendants and appliques as well as the exquisite chain, this piece is truly a work of art! Precious metal: 82. 6-85. 1% gold (equivalent to ~ 20K) and 14-15. 7% silver. Size: chain measures 12. 625" L x . 375" W (32. 1 cm x 1 cm); largest pendants (winged + floral above) measure 2. 125" L x . 875" W (5. 4 cm x 2. 2 cm); weight: 62. 7 grams. . As mentioned above, the winged figural pendants are nearly identical. All are cloaked in lavish drapery folds, present lovely visages with delicate features and combed back coiffures as well as grand wings delineated via repousse. However, they differentiate themselves with distinct hand gestures and attributes. From left to right the respective figures display: right hand to chest; left hand holding a scepter; right hand holding a small offering; both hands holding a bowl or shell; left hand holding an offering; both hands holding what appears to be a flaming torch representing victory (consistent with Nike attributes) across the chest; and finally, both hands pressed together as if expressing gratitude or prayer. Certainly a mesmerizing ensemble of figural pendants sure to delight many an admirer!. . Accompanied by Stoetzer examination report #112712. 1 (signed and dated November 26, 2012) that confirms the authenticity of this piece. . . " Surface wear with scuffs, indentations, and minute fractures in the gold as noted by the Stoetzer Report, which also states, "contribute to our conclusion that the object is natural and not contrived. " Leftmost winged figure is missing left arm. Missing hook or clasp; however, a reputable jeweler may be able to remedy this with a complementary clasp.
