Condition:
Overall, some areas of moth damage, mainly in corners and edge of the central panel. Upper righthand corner with one panel cut out but present. This rare example was discovered rolled up in a large batch of curtains. The two missing panels that were historically separated were offered as framed works in The Pioneer Collection of Dr. and Mrs. Donald Shelley, Pook & Pook, April 20, 2007, and sold for over $10,000.

A turned-head kestrel with raised wing tips and exquisite textured feather detail perched on a piece of driftwood mounted on a base. Signed and dated under base and inside of joint where the branch joins base.
Before turning to carving full-time, Lepper had a distinguished career as a graphic artist in advertising and an art director. The master woodcarver has many accolades to his name, including the first purchase award at the 2013 Canadian National Wildfowl Carving Championship. The Ward Museum reports, "Since he began competing in 1987, he has won numerous ribbons, including many Best in Shows in Canada, and in the U.S. ... In 2003 he won a Best in Masters Decorative Life-size Wildfowl, and second in World Decorative Miniature Wildfowl. Noted primarily for his songbirds, he is also recognized for his raptors."

Massachusetts collectors Ernest B. Dane and his wife, Helen Pratt Dane, bequeathed a significant collection of Chinese jade and "Numbered Jun" ware to the Fogg Art Museum at Harvard University in 1942.
