EUROPEAN RETICULATED EEL-TRAP VASE, CA. 1790 Rare European reticulated, parcel-gilt, and polychromed eel-trap form vase, circa 1790, with "Spode" signed to base in iron red (used 1790 - 1795), a variation after the Meissen model by Johann Joachim Kändler (German, 1706-1775), the eel-trap in parcel gilt "wicker", decorated with insects, and nestled into rocaille-form foliage forming two arms and a base in which are nesting two geese and their eggs. 10" H x 7.5" diameter.
Note: J J Kaendler's original model inspired copycat works by the Chelsea and Derby factories as early as 1765 (cf. Christie's: New York, 30 June 2015, "The Collection of Richard Mellon Scaife" Lot 31.), but this slightly later iteration bearing a "Spode" signature is quite unusual.
