SPENCERIAN COMPOSITION (AMERICAN SCHOOL LATE 19TH CENTURY). Pen and ink on paper. Drawing depicting a lion pouncing on a leaping stag. Imperfections. Framed with gilt liner 23''h. 29 1/4''w. Spencerian calligraphy was a decorative style of cursive script developed by Platt Rogers Spencer (d. 1864) of Geneva in northeastern Ohio. Long diagonal tear across the entire piece -- restored and difficult to see but still there. Foxing toning of paper and several areas of acid burn --one through the center of the piece. Spencerian calligraphy was a new fancy and decorative style of cursive script developed by Platt Rogers Spencer (d. 1864) of Geneva in northeastern Ohio. His Spencerian method became the most widely known system of handwriting instruction in the third quarter of the 19th century. Spencer began promoting this handwriting style as early as 1848. He founded Dyke Business College in Cleveland Ohio and franchised his special method of teaching throughout North America.
