- A SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE CARVED
A SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE CARVED AND POLYCHROMED PLAQUE ...A SPANISH COLONIAL STYLE CARVED AND POLYCHROMED PLAQUE OF ST. FRANCIS OF ASSISI, PROBABLY MEXICO, 20TH CENTURY, the relief carved 3/4 bust plaque with painted red and gilt robe and red headdress, holding his left hand upward in blessing, and in his right a Bible, both hands with gilt painted crosses representing his stigmata, drilled for mounting; together with associated carved and painted three tier Papal crown.NOTE: The iconography within this piece reveals several inconsistencies. The attribute of the stigmata is traditionally associated with St. Francis of Assisi, founder of the Franciscan Order which played a major role in establishing Spanish dominion though out the New World. However, St. Francis is usually depicted wearing the plain brown robe associated with his Order, and not brilliant red and gold as seen on this piece. One suggestion has been forwarded that this is a representation of St. Peter, which explains the three-tiered Papal crown and would account for the luxurious robing. However, the attribute usually associated with St. Peter is the crossed Papal keys, and not the signs of the stigmata. Height: 17" Width: 11 1/2" Depth: 8 1/2"
