ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS.ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS. MOSES B.) RUSSELL (MASSACHUSETTS, 1809-1854), MINIATURE WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT ON IVORY OF A YOUNG GIRL WEARING A BLUE DRESS AND HOLDING AN APPLE., OVAL 2.75" X 2.25". FRAMED 3" X 2.375".ATTRIBUTED TO CLARISSA PETERS (MRS. MOSES B.) RUSSELL, Massachusetts, 1809-1854, Miniature watercolor portrait on ivory of a young girl wearing a blue dress and holding an apple. Unsigned but bearing several characteristics of Russell's work, including the striated background with a subtle "halo" around the girl's head, the prominent eyes, the finely delineated eyebrows and fingernails, the nearly imperceptible line at the wrist that separates the forearm from the hand, the delicate details on the dress and the vividly colored apple. Dimensions: Oval 2.75" x 2.25". Framed 3" x 2.375". Provenance: Notes:In her day, Clarissa Peters Russell was a well-known miniaturist, specializing in portraits of children. Her work was so favored that when she died from a violent case of seasickness, the news made the front page of Boston newspapers.Over time, however, like many women artists, she faded into obscurity. Because she rarely signed her paintings, many of them were misattributed to her husband, also a miniaturist, or to itinerant portraitist Joseph Whiting Stock. She was born in North Andover, Massachusetts, and it is believed she attended Franklin Academy. She married Moses Russell in 1839 and the two had a son, Albert Cuyp Russell. By 1835 she was in Boston painting miniatures and giving private lessons. From 1840 to 1851, she shared a studio with her husband and was very much part of the city's art scene. Her portraits are notable not just for their fastidious details, but for being sympathetic and vibrant likenesses, in contrast to the more typical solemn and flat depictions of young sitters.Reference:"Mrs. Moses B. Provenance: comes from the collection of Mr William Tippit, friend of Dr Scheer and owned the property that Dr Scheer would visit in Florida and where some of the images were taken for this series.
Image Size: 30 x 40 in.
Sheet Size: 34 x 46.5 in.

Joseph Scheer is a Professor of Print Media, and Co-Director/Founder of the Institute for Electronic Arts at the School of Art and Design, Alfred University. His current works, which span print media, video and web based projects, use technology to re-examine nature through interpretive collecting and visual recording. His most recent work has been exhibited at The Brooklyn Museum of Art, Brooklyn, New York and the National Museum of China, Beijing. The National Museum of Sweden, Stockholm and The Field Museum, Chicago, IL, He has published two books about his work; Night Visions, the Secret Designs of Moths, published by Prestel and Night Flyers, published by Nexus Press.
To make his astounding prints, artist Joseph Scheer captures incredibly detailed images of moths with a scanner originally designed for film and transparencies. The tiny micro moths are as small as .25 inch and the giant Silkmoths have wings spans up to 5 inches. Using a special scanner that has a programmable focus for different depths of field, he scans each specimen between 7 and 40 times using different points of focus. Then he painstakingly reassembles them choosing only parts from the files that are in focus. The scanner records so much information—67 million data points per square inch—that a single specimen may take a full day to scan. The data files generated are huge: some of his many layered images are up to 10 Gigabytes before processing. With resolution that high, scans can be enlarged 2,700 percent and still be perfectly clear.

JOSEPHINE PADDOCK WATERCOLOR - NEW YORKJOSEPHINE PADDOCK WATERCOLOR - NEW YORK CITY, CA. 1910Josephine Paddock (American, 1885-1964). Watercolor on heavy gauge paper, ca. 1910. Signed "J. Paddock" on the lower left. A lively New York City street scene by Barnard-educated artist Josephine Paddock who studied under impressive artists at the Art Student's League, including the legendary Robert Henri (1865-1929). Henri was the leader and heart of the Ashcan School, a group of artists with journalism backgrounds known for rejecting idealized imagery upheld by academic art and Impressionism, and opting to depict compositions that leaned more toward the gritty realities of the world rather than flawless "pretty" imagery. Henri aimed for art that was, in his words, "as real as mud, as the clods of horseshit and snow that froze on Broadway in winter." While arguably less radical than her teacher, Paddock's painting does capture the excitement of this crowded city street set between abutting tall buildings with the Flatiron Building at the intersection of Fifth Avenue and Broadway. Paddock even includes a bit of urban grittiness, as plumes of smoke rise in the distance. Size: 19" L x 14" W (48.3 cm x 35.6 cm)
Josephine Paddock earned a B.A. at Barnard College and studied at the Art Students League with legendary artists including Robert Henri, William Merritt Chase, Kenyon Cox, and John Alexander. Paddock exhibited at the legendary Armory Show of 1913, showing three watercolors: "Swans on the Grass" (1910), "Swan Study-Peace" (1910), and "Swan Study-Aspiration" (1910). Paddock was a member of the American Watercolor Society, the Connecticut Academy of Fine Arts, the New Haven Paint and Clay Club, the North Shore Art Association (Gloucester, MA), the Grand Central Art Gallery (New York City), and the American Artist Professional League. Most impressively, The Josephine Paddock Fellowship -an award named for her - is the highest graduate studies award in the arts at Barnard College, Columbia University. Paddock's sister Ethel Louise Paddock also studied with Robert Henri, and both sisters exhibited art in Henri's Exhibition of Independent Artists in 1910, a show that served as a prototype for the Armory Show of 1913.

This cabinet was one of a pair, which were split up between two friends shopping in London at Harris Lindsay circa 2000. The other cabinet was purchased by the academic collector Peter Rose (recently sold at Christie's London, 30th September 2021, Lot 110, as part of The Peter Rose and Albert Gallichan Collection (£12,000). Stamped 'GILLOW & CO' '2324' the Christie's example has a note in the provenance mentioning Samlesbury Hall in Lancashire. Although originally built in the 14th century, Samlesbury Hall was acquired by the industrialist Joseph Harrison (1805-1880) in 1862 and given to his son William Harrison (18** -1879). William Harrison spent a vast sum of money refurbishing the interiors and furnishing the hall. The Gillow estimate sketch books, held at the Westminster City archives, have records of him ordering numerous pieces of reformed gothic furniture in 1866. The commission includes pieces in Bevan's distinctive style but also in Pugin's.
