- RARE BLACKFEET QUILLED & BEADED BUFFALO
RARE BLACKFEET QUILLED & BEADED BUFFALO HEADDRESSThis is an incredible, large buffalo horn headdress with polychrome painted buffalo trailer along with beadwork and quillwork from the Blackfeet Indians of Montana. This is truly a large, heavy head dress / headdress that features a long polychrome painted and decorated buffalo / bison hide trailer that hangs off the back of the headdress. The headdress is comprised of an Indian tanned buffalo hide cap that hangs down the back around 18-inches along with two full, polished buffalo horns affixed to the cap with thick buffalo hide lacing. There is a beautiful beadwork blue brow band showing a wonderful hour-glass or snake pattern done with early glass trade seed beads in cobalt and sky padre light blue. There are several drops of old trade clothe, beads, trade ribbons and two drops of what appears to be human hair, but could be horse tail hair tied onto the side temple areas along with older brass sewing thimbles. The inside of the cap bonnet is lined with old trade clothe. The buffalo hide trailer is attached to the cap with thick hide lacing and measures 58 inches in length by about 12 inches in width. It is artfully decorated with painted designs and symbols, strips of hide lacing and twenty-four large tarnished metal trade sleigh bells / large hawk bells. The painted symbols are in a wonderful Blackfeet / Blackfoot fashion, said to represent the owner’s war exploits and life experiences. There is a pictorial scene with a Blackfoot warrior holding a tomahawk and what appears to be a gunstock war club and a horse. The horse scene has a unique object painted in front of the horse that is noted by such scholars such as John Ewers wrote about it being some kind of “thing” or mystery object. Some theorize that it could be a medicine bundle, but mainly nicknamed the “thing”. It appears in other documented Blackfeet rock art pictographs and paintings with horses, similar to how it appears here in the scene with the horse. There are other painted symbols and designs which are documented as Blackfoot in colors of yellow, green, red and blue. The artwork is extensive and masterfully done. Above the beaded brown band shows large solid brass concho button spots in a long row on trade clothe muslin. The tip of each polished buffalo horn shows four Indian tanned hide fringes wrapped in porcupine quill, quillwork with natural ocher / ochre mineral pigment dyes having small rolled tin jingle dangle cones and brass covered metal hawk trade bells. The headdress was noted by the Ted Levy collection as being from the Indian Wars era of the 19th Century, circa 1880, please examine the pictures and preview the piece in order to deduce your own representation of age and origin. The headdress or war bonnet shows a combination of early 19th Century materials and manufacture with some later repairs or additions, but overall a historic, large and impressive war bonnet headdress. Some stiffening to the back hide, the top is soft, little to no hair loss to the hide, only slight bead and quill loss, some fading to the paint, but overall the piece displays beautifully. Taylor and Levy noted the piece was likely used later on, on the Indian Reservations for ceremonial purposes. Measures overall 68”L from the tip of the horn to the bottom of the trailer and about 18 inches wide. Total weight of 4 lbs. 10 oz.

Truly a beautiful bag. The bag was found to be an authentic 19th Century Santee Sioux Buffalo hide example from the experts at Cowan's Hindman. Measures overall 15.5"L by 8"W. U6.
- IRON KNOBKERIE CANE-Ca. 1890 -Iron knob
IRON KNOBKERIE CANE-Ca. 1890 -Iron knob fashioned in a plain and flattened ball shape and its iron collar turned with multiple rings mounted on a stepped malacca shaft strengthened and weighted with a concealed iron rod and a metal ferrule. -Rightfully swung in trained hands, the weight of the knob and stiffen shaft becomes devastating effects. Worn for support and protection, this cane is a dangerous disguised weapon, a Knobkerrie, also called Life Preserver or Bludgeon. -It survived in its initial condition and with the anticipated signs of age. Notable is the natural mottled coloring of the malacca, which in itself is a great collectable rarity and adds to the desirability to this cane. -H. 1 ¼” x 1 ¾”, O.L. 33 ¼” -$300-$500 -For Bludgeon Canes see C. Dike, Cane Curiosa, chapter 28 Bludgeons, Page 279, 28/1 and chapter 29, Sword canes, page, 297, and Francis Monek’s book, Canes Through The Ages, page 217 & 226.
- 2ND C. GANDHARAN SCHIST HEAD OF BUDDHACentral
2ND C. GANDHARAN SCHIST HEAD OF BUDDHACentral Asia, Pakistan, India, and Afghanistan, Gandharan, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A hand-carved miniature grey schist Buddha head, depicted nearly in the round, with a wavy coiffure, a generous ushnisha (topknot) as well as a mesmerizing face that is skillfully modeled with elegant features including almond-shaped, downcast eyes, an arched browline leading to an aquiline nose, and full, closed lips. The drama of this visage with its stylized wavy tresses and meditative expression does not discount its naturalism. Notice how skillfully the sculptor rendered the philtrum (vertical groove in midline above the upper lip), the Cupid's bow of the upper lip, the tear troughs between the eyes and nose, the nasal bridge and nostrils, and the contours of the chin. A wonderful example. Size: 1.6" W x 2.4" H (4.1 cm x 6.1 cm); 4" H (10.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Alexander the Great conquered Gandhara in 330 BCE and with the help of the Indo-Greek kings introduced classical traditions that would influence Gandharan art for the following seven centuries. The stylized curly Mediterranean hair and top knot derive from classical sculptures such as the Apollo Belvedere (330 BCE), and the sensitive modeling of the expressive visage demonstrates a classical influence as well. A rare example of Greco-Buddhist art that demonstrates a strong syncretism between eastern and western traditions.
The head of the Buddha is perhaps the most significant element of the deity as it represents the immense body of knowledge and wisdom of Buddha along with the tranquil nature that emanates from his expression. What's more, in this example the sculptor's adept modeling technique allows for a moving spiritual interpretation as opposed to other comparatively colder, stiffer renderings. A peaceful countenance with a rounded ushnisha symbolizing the wisdom and knowledge acquired after attaining enlightenment, and elongated ears, a physical feature symbolic of the Buddha's time as a prince when he wore elaborate ear ornaments to demonstrate wealth and prosperity. Of course, the prince stopped wearing them when he left the palace to become an ascetic; however, his earlobes remained stretched signifying a conscious decision to reject the material world in exchange for spiritual enlightenment and simultaneously suggest that the Buddha can hear all that is asked for and needed in the earthly world. Those half-closed eyes indicate a meditative state - at once looking both outward and inward. Furthermore, the curled hair of the Buddha signifies the nobility of Buddha. Beyond the multi-layered meaning embodied in the iconography of this piece, the sculptor's artistry and technique is exceptional.

- CHINESE MING DYNASTY STONE BUST OF BUDDHAEast
CHINESE MING DYNASTY STONE BUST OF BUDDHAEast Asia, China, Ming Dynasty, ca. 1368 to 1644 CE. A superb stone bust of Buddha draped in a robe with a skillfully-incised, spiral motif hem that folds at his chest, all adorned in liberal remains of teal and white pigments. Boasting a tranquil presentation, his round visage presents downcast eyes beneath arched brows, a flattened nose, full cheeks, and petite, bow lips, all surmounted by a tightly coiled coiffure and tiered ushnisha. His rounded shoulders taper to a thick neck as his giant ears flank his head, their drooping lobes nearly touching his shoulders. Size: 11" W x 19.3" H (27.9 cm x 49 cm); 21.5" H (54.6 cm) on included custom stand.
