- NORTH AFRICAN PALEOLITHIC ACHEULEAN
NORTH AFRICAN PALEOLITHIC ACHEULEAN STONE HAND AXENorthwestern Africa, Algeria / Morocco, Acheulean (Lower Paleolithic), ca. 1.2 million to 500,000 years ago. This is a large and remarkable hand-knapped stone tool that functioned as a hand axe. The bifacially-flaked body has an elongated profile with a rounded proximal end, partially incorporating the natural curve of stone as a grip and the tapered, chopping tip is perfectly preserved and is complete and unbroken. The dark and smooth "desert varnish" surface is from millennia of exposure to the elements and sand. The Acheulean stone tool tradition - named after the location in France where tools of this kind were first identified in 1847 - represented a technological revolution. This blade was likely manufactured by homo erectus, a close ancestor of modern humans, and was made to be used in a variety of tasks, such as cutting, digging, and scraping hides. It is always thrilling to hold such ancient artefacts and imagine our prehistoric ancestors using these tools! Size: 6.25" L x 3" W (15.9 cm x 7.6 cm)
Provenance: private J. Hart collection, Houston, Texas, USA; ex-Michelle Vandendries collection, Mauretania, 1992

- NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC STONE HAND AXES
NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC STONE HAND AXES (3)Native American, Southern United States, Tennessee, Humphrey County, Waverly, Archaic to Woodland period, ca. 2000 BCE to 1600 CE. A great collection of 4 hand knapped stone tools or axe heads, each displaying an ovoid shape with a bifacial and convex body. These are flaked with sharp peripheries encircling the entire circumference. Each is a good size for handheld use, but these could have been hafted onto wooden handles as well. Before the introduction of iron, Native Americans relied on stone to form tools such as hammers and axes. Creating these items was a painstaking task which involved using other stones to peck and flake the tool into the desired form. Size of largest: 4.75" L x 2.5" W (12.1 cm x 6.4 cm)
Provenance: private southwestern Pennsylvania, USA collection, acquired prior to 2000

- ARCHAIC / WOODLAND NATIVE AMERICAN STONE
ARCHAIC / WOODLAND NATIVE AMERICAN STONE TOOLS (8)Native American, Midwestern United States, Ohio, Early Archaic through Woodland period, ca. 8000 BCE to 1700 CE (10,000 to 300 BP). A collection of 6 projectile points, 1 celt, and 1 hammerstone, all hand-knapped from stones. The points included are a Broad Blade point made from a pink chert, a LeCroy bifurcated point from a tan chert, a MacCorkle bifurcated point from a flint, an Intrusive Mound side notched point, a Big Sandy chert point, and a Wade type point from a gray chert. The celt is a miniature votive form, using a rare black speckled gneiss and this celt has been in some respected, old collections, including that of Agustus Wherle. The grooved hammerstone is likely from Late Woodland or Intrusive Mound cultures and is made from a river cobble. This stone object might be much older than presumed, and, if so, it might have been used as a hammer, a "skull cracker" precursor, used in later times, or even a "tie-on" atlatl weight, if not a supposed form which it closely resembles. Size of hammerstone: 4" L x 1.75" W (10.2 cm x 4.4 cm)

North America, Native American, Kentucky, Fulton County, Mississippian culture, ca. 1000 to 1500 CE. A hand-knapped stone tool with an oblong form, slightly convex faces, and a thin curved blade. The narrow end is the butt or handle side, and widens to the cutting edge at the opposite end. The stone is smooth and polished towards the blade, likely from use. - RARE ECUDORAN LA TOLITA BONE FIGURAL
RARE ECUDORAN LA TOLITA BONE FIGURAL CARVING**Originally Listed At $800**
Pre-Columbian, Ecuador, La Tolita (sometimes Tumaco), ca. 350 BCE to 350 CE. A rare example of a stylized anthropomorphic figure carved from ungulate bone with expertly designed openwork details. The figure kneels atop an integral cylindrical platform and features a curved tail, attenuated limbs that curve atop the bulbous chest, and broad shoulders that taper inwards to form the neckline. The expressive countenance peers outwards with petite eyes surrounded by incised facial wrinkles, and a lengthy tongue drapes from a gaping mouth filled with thin teeth. Figural bone carvings like this example are exceptionally scarce, making this an outstanding example from ancient Ecuador! Size: 0.7" W x 3.8" H (1.8 cm x 9.7 cm); 4.25" H (10.8 cm) on included custom stand.
The artistic creations from the Ecuadorian culture of La Tolita / Tumaco were some of the finest in ancient South America. Many wood and bone figurines, ceramic creations, and stone carvings depicted naturalistic details seldom observed in Pre-Columbian artwork, with almost all of them exhibiting ear ornamentation, nose rings, large pectorals, or other forms of fine embellishments. La Tolita artisans crafted simple yet effective stone tools to shape hard substances into recognizable forms, which also increased their proficiency in carving semi-precious stones as well.
