NATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONENATIVE AMERICAN WOODLANDS STONE AXE HEAD - FULL GROOVENative American, Midwestern United States, Michigan, Farwell, Eastern Woodland, Archaic Period, ca. 5000 BCE (7000 BP). A hefty stone axe head that is hand-pecked from a mottled gray stone. Across one end is a full groove that encircles the entire circumference of the axe head, which not only gave the implement its name - "full groove stone axe" - but also allowed it to be attached to a wooden handle with a cord. The head is elongated with a rounded butt end and a thick body that tapers to a straight cutting edge. This is a substantial tool, great for a variety of tasks, such as chopping wood. Size: 7.5" L x 4.5" W (19 cm x 11.4 cm)
Provenance: private Lumberton, Texas, USA collection, acquired before 2010

NATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC DIORITENATIVE AMERICAN ARCHAIC DIORITE FULL GROOVE AXE HEADNative American, Midwestern to Eastern United States, Eastern Woodland, Archaic period, ca. 5000 to 3000 BCE. A hand-pecked diorite stone axe head with a double headed form, and a groove that encircles the entire circumference, hence the designation: "full groove axe head." The groove has raised ridges along the edge. The blades and ridges are nearly perfect, with minimum wear- the blades suggesting this pretty mottled stone had a ritualistic use rather than utilitarian. Size: 4.75" L x 2.5" W (12.1 cm x 6.4 cm)

MASSIVE ARCHAIC EASTERN WOODLANDMASSIVE ARCHAIC EASTERN WOODLAND STONE FULL GROOVE AXENative American, southeastern United States, western North Carolina, Caney Fork Township, Eastern Woodland, Late Archaic period, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. An impressive axe head of a massive, rectangular form, hand-pecked from a hefty, mica-rich gray stone with caramel and butterscotch-hued inclusions. A deep groove encircles the entire circumference of the head flanked by a pair of broad, raised bands, hence the type "full groove" axe, which enabled the stone to be hafted to a wooden pole with cords. The wide, flat butt gently tapers to the slightly curved bit, which displays some chips and nicks suggestive of use. However, this hefty head must have required great strength to wield as tool, and may have only served a ceremonial function as the mottled stone is inherently beautiful with the shimmering mica flecks! Size: 9.2" L x 7" W (23.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
This remarkable implement was found in western North Carolina near Judaculla Rock, which is a curvilinear-shaped outcrop of soapstone containing more petroglyphs than any known boulder east of the Mississippi River. Dating to the Late Archaic period, Judaculla Rock contains approximately 1,548 incised motifs.
