Signed "F. Sartorius" lower right, dated 1779. Image measures 35.75" x 39.75". In a gilt wood frame; 39.25" x 43.5" overall. Charles Edwin Esquire, the owner of the horse and a wealthy gentleman, ran for Parliament in 1741 with Admiral Vernon against incumbents Sir Charles Wagner and Lord Sundon. Lord Sundon used military force to close the polls and started a riot. A petition was brought to Commons to void the election and was passed by a vote of 220 to 216. Edwin and Vernon ran uncontested in the new election. Francis Sartorius is from a family of artists and is known for equestrian scenes. Provenance: purchased in 1964 from Tillou Gallery, Buffalo, New York; purported to be from the collection of the Duke of Portland.
