- JAN JOSEF HOREMANS I (ANTWERP, 1682-1759)
JAN JOSEF HOREMANS I (ANTWERP, 1682-1759) Oil on canvas.
Jan Josef Horemans I (Antwerp, 1682-1759)
Jan Josef Horemans the Elder is known primarily as a painter of historical and genre scenes. Horemans first studied under sculptor Michael van der Voort and continued as a student of Jan van Pel. In 1706, he became a master of the St. Luke's guild in Antwerp, where he spent his entire life. His genre paintings were created along the same line as his predecessor, David Teniers I, repeatedly depicting interiors with card players as well as cabaret interiors. His most famous pupil was his son, Jan Josef Horemans the Younger, who worked in a very similar style. In fact, father and son often collaborated and it is sometimes difficult to distinguish the style of one from that of the other. The Elder was called the "Brown Horemans" and the Younger was called the "Lighter Horemans" to distinguish between their slightly darker and lighter palettes.
- EMMA LAMPERT COOPER (AMERICAN, 1855-1920)
EMMA LAMPERT COOPER (AMERICAN, 1855-1920) MOROCCAN COAST Oil artist board. Signed 'E. Lampert Cooper' (lower left).
Emma Lampert Cooper (American, 1855-1920)
Emma Lampert Cooper was born in 1860 near Rochester, New York. Upon leaving the area, she studied at the Cooper Union Art School and the Art Students League in New York, and at the Delecluse Academy in Paris. Later returning to Rochester, she taught at the Mechanics Institute from 1893-1897 and was active in the art life of the city until her marriage to the painter Colin Campbell Cooper from 1897. After traveling in Europe for a period of time, the couple settled in New York City. There, working in an impressionist style, she turned to her husband’s favorite theme, the architectural treasures of New York and other historic cities.
The Coopers traveled constantly in search of subjects and in the spring of 1913, they visited Charleston, South Carolina. Though nothing is known about their stay, their visit is recorded in Colin’s paintings of some of the city’s most historic and cherished structures, including St. Philip’s Church, Charleston. During their trip, they also visited Beaufort, a small coastal town about seventy miles south of Charleston, noted for its picturesque buildings, alleyways, and streets. Emma’s Old Beaufort, South Carolina is of a subject that she and Colin both painted, probably side-by-side and on the same day. Fluent brushwork and radiant color are typical of her vivacious style.

JAMES ROSENQUIST (AMERICAN, 1933-2017) "THE BOOK DISAPPEARS FOR THE FAST STUDENT" Etching and aquatint. Signed 'James Rosenquist' (lower right), titled and numbered '18/78' (lower left), and dated '1977'. Blind stamp (lower center).Artist BioJames Rosenquist (American, 1933-2017)
James Rosenquist was an American artist and one of the proponents of the Pop art movement. Drawing from his background working in sign painting, Rosenquist’s pieces often explored the role of advertising and consumer culture in art and society, utilizing techniques he learned making commercial art to depict popular cultural icons and mundane everyday objects. His pieces were unique in the Pop Art movement due to the way that they often employed elements of surrealism using fragments of advertisements and cultural imagery to emphasize the overwhelming nature of ads.
- DALE CHIHULY (AMERICAN, B. 1941) BLOWN
DALE CHIHULY (AMERICAN, B. 1941) BLOWN GLASS FORM Signed and initialed 'P.P. -94' (to underside). Dale Chihuly (American, b. 1941)
Dale Chihuly has become an internationally celebrated personality in contemporary art and design, whose prominence in the field of contemporary studio glass is unmatched. During his many years as a teacher, Chihuly made a point of gathering artists from all media to work with him and with glass, with the aim of introducing new points of view and infusing new energy into the process of glassworking.
In 1969, he took leadership of an important glass program at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence, and two years later, he founded Pilchuck Glass School, the premier international school for glass artists, with the Seattle art patrons Anne Gould Hauberg and John Hauberg. Students combined glass and other media in both glassblowing and installation work—often compensating in creative presentation for what they lacked in technique—and they were always encouraged by Chihuly to approach the material in unorthodox ways. With these achievements alone, Chihuly would be recognized for his enduring impact on the American studio glass movement, but he has been able to pursue a prolific and successful career as an artist as well.
While Chihuly’s work has changed dramatically throughout his nearly 50-year career, certain preferences have remained the same. He has always worked glass in a variety of sizes, from small vessels to room-size installations. He has always been interested in sculpture and in outdoor projects where the landscape may be used as a point of departure. Color, on the other hand, has been a gradual acquisition, from the muted, relatively monochromatic 1970s works, such as the Blanket Cylinders and early Seaforms, to the brilliant colors of the Macchias and Venetians in the 1980s and beyond.

EDWIN WILLARD DEMING (AMERICAN, 1860-1942) WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH NATIVE AMERICANS ON HORSEBACK Oil on academy board. Signed (artist's cipher) 'E.W. Deming' (lower right).
Edwin Willard Deming (American, 1860-1942)
Edwin Willard Deming was an American painter and sculptor. While in his teens, Deming traveled to Indian territory in Oklahoma and sketched extensively. Determined to become a painter of Indians, he enrolled at the Art Students League, then spend a year at the Academie Julian in Paris studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. His active career of painting and illustrating took him repeatedly to the lands of the Blackfoot, Crow, and Sioux, as well as to Arizona and New Mexico. After the turn of the century, Deming devoted more time to sculpture but also began work on a series of romantic murals of Indian life, which were subsequently installed in the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the American Indian in New York.
