- AMERICAN SCHOOL CAST-IRON MODEL OF MR.
AMERICAN SCHOOL CAST-IRON MODEL OF MR. PEANUTWith a removable hat.
40 x 15 x 15 in.
Note: This cast iron figure of the Planters’ Mr. Peanut spokes character is likely one of a number of models produced in the 1920s and 1930s. Designed to sit atop fence posts surrounding the Planters Nut and Chocolate Company factories in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and later, Suffolk, Virginia, this example is likely from the Suffolk factory, which was established in 1913. Another similar example from the Suffolk factory was donated by Kraft Foods to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History for a 2015 exhibition titled “American Enterprise.” The exhibition told the story of business and marketing innovation in America. Mr. Peanut was born from a sketch created by schoolboy Antonio Gentile in 1916, when Planters hosted a contest to design a logo to set themselves apart from growing competition. Over a hundred years later, Mr. Peanut remains the beloved face of Planters Nuts.

- FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK WINDSOR
FINE GEORGE II MAHOGANY COMB BACK WINDSOR ARMCHAIR43 1/4 x 30 x 23 1/2 in., height of seat 17 1/2 in.
Note: An identical Windsor chair is illustrated in Cotton, Bernard D., The English Regional Chair, Woodbridge, Suffolk: Antique Collectors Club Publishing, 1990, p. 46, fig. TV17. This identical Windsor model is also illustrated in a Vernay & Jussel, Inc. catalog with an accompanied footnote: The system of roads left by the Roman occupation of Britain had remained, for almost 1,700 years, the basis of land travel in all areas of the island. It was only at the start of the eighteenth century that major improvements and expansion of the roads began, largely due to the impetus of trade requirements. One by-product of this new ease of travel was the pooling in London of talent drawn from the provincial areas. Gifted craftsman were able, as at no time before, to make the journey "up to London", from any part of the Kingdom, and profit from the higher wages and opportunities for advancement in the metropolis. Conversely, as people returned to their homes from a London visit, they carried back with them new ideas and new styles, profoundly influencing local customs.
This intercourse between London and the provinces led to an interesting cross-fertilization of styles, and local craftsman, their talent bred within the framework of an inherited tradition, refined rather than abandoned that tradition in the sophisticated, international atmosphere of the city.
The elegant adaptation of the popular Windsor chair is a product of such exchange. here the native beech, yew and ash have been replaced by imported (an expensive) mahogany. The flat out-scrolling arms and seat, the deeply scrolled brackets to the acanthus carved cabriole legs were all fashionable in the second quarter of the (18th) century. Most remarkable is the use of French scroll toes, so popular in the Rococo, integrated with perfect skill into a purely traditional design. "It is estimated that in 1750, 1 out of every 6 Englishman had had direct contact with the capitol." See Wrigley, " A Simple Model of London's Importance, Past and Present ", No. 37, July 1967.

- T.K. FAIRLESS OIL ON CANVAS STILL LIFE
T.K. FAIRLESS OIL ON CANVAS STILL LIFE PAINTING.Oil on Canvas Still Life Painting Signed "T.K. Fairless" Lower Right. (Thomas Kerr Fairless, 1825–1853), landscape-painter, born in 1825 at Hexham, Northumberland, was one of the sons of Joseph Fairless of Hexham, a well-known and popular antiquary, whose name is inseparably connected with the history of Northumbrian antiquities. Young Fairless showed an early predilection for art, which was encouraged by his parents. He was a great student of Bewick's vignette engravings, and for some time worked under Bewick's pupil, Nicholson, a wood-engraver, at Newcastle. Being dissatisfied with his progress he came to London, with the intention of making art his profession, and devoted himself to landscape-painting. His works were executed in a broad and vigorous manner, with a fine idea of color and exquisite feeling for the beauties of country scenery, gathered during the summer days among the woods and pastures of England. From 1848 to 1851 he was an exhibitor at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and the Suffolk Street Gallery. He had considerable practice as a teacher of drawing and painting. He also painted sea-views and still life's. He intended practicing his art in Scotland, however with poor health in Hexham he died on 14 July 1853, in his twenty-eighth year. Image size 9-1/4" x 13", in an ornate gilt frame, 17-1/2" x 21-1/2" overall.

ATTRIB. THOMAS BUTTERSWORTH (BRITISH, 1768-1842) OIL PA...DESCRIPTION: Attributed Thomas Buttersworth (British, 1768–1842) "The Gale of Plymouth" Oil on Canvas. Features a rendering of a large ship sailing through rough seas with smaller boats seen off in the distance. Signed lower right and dated on the back "Thomas Buttersworth "The Gale of Plymouth" November 23 1824" Thomas Buttersworth (British, 1768–1842) was born on the Isle of Wight, and joined the Royal Navy in London in 1780. He began his painting career while at sea, and the accuracy of many of his late 18th-century Mediterranean subjects, and his paintings of the Battle of St. Vincent and the Blockade of Cadiz, would indicate that they were painted on location. On his return to England, he established himself as a painter of marine scenes, executing ship portraits of larger naval and merchant vessels and important naval engagements. These included his famous Battle of Trafalgar, which was exhibited at the British Institution in 1825, and is now a part of the National Maritime Museum collection in Greenwich. He exhibited only one painting each at the Royal Academy, the British Institution, and Suffolk Street, but he was a prolific artist whose works were and still are very popular with collectors.
