Note: Ink inscription reading "For Stuart, in friendship, Aaron" (Copeland). This work inspired the composer Aaron Copland's 1954 opera "The Tender Land". Provenance: Bauman Rare Books, New York. Sam Spode is known for horse and dog portrait painting, equestrian genre. 2nd Item: Harry Lyman horse engraving, "Brighton", 1886, with lineage and inscribed, "Will make the season of 1887 at Ashwood Stables seven miles west of Columbia, Maury Co. Tenn. at $25 the season." Sight - 14" H x 14 1/2" W. Framed- 15 1/2" H x 16" W. 3rd Item: WALLACE, J.H. Condition:
1st Item: Temporary stretcher and canvas adhered with tacks. 2" x 1/2" slice lower right of horse. 5/8" L tear upper left corner to right of roof. 1/2" tear left upper edge. Overall craquelure, abrasions and surface grime. Approximately 10 small holes or punctures, largest 1/8" x 1/8". 2nd Item: Significant foxing. 4-1/2" loss of paper upper left corner; loss left center edge. Tear across center and right lower quadrant. 3rd Item: Water damage, few holes and grime to cover. Cover is loose from spine. Toning to paper. Insect damage.

Wild Rose shows crazing and three small blisters in resevoir of platter.
