- An Exact Ground-Plot of ye City
An Exact Ground-Plot of ye City of Worcester as it Stood Fortifyd 3 Sept 1651 11.75 x 18 in. plate approx. 11 x 14.5 in. folded to open as if intended for a bound volume. Town shown in plan but houses and churches in bird's-eye view as are troops fighting in the fields to the East and South of the town. Very little relief illustrated but fields and forests designated with pictures. Town has streets lining every road and alley. The spaces marked off with these buildings show what look like formal gardens in every square - some geometric some look like flowers. We have not seen this technique on other maps of the period but it is most likely a decoration of space. Upper left with two coats of arms one of Charles II of England other unknown; upper right has Charles II of Scotland's coat of arms; center with a coat of arms with saltire and 12 crosses with crosslets (possibly associated with Scotland). Worcester is the town where Cromwell defeated Charles II and the Scots in the last battle of the English Civil War. Condition: Scattered foxing and toning especially along folds and edges of paper. Small separations beginning at folds.
