INK RUBBING OF "THE PREFACE OF XUANZANG'SINK RUBBING OF "THE PREFACE OF XUANZANG'S HOLY TEACHINGS"
SONG TO MING DYNASTY ??? ???????????????? ?????? ?? ????: ??????????????????????????????????????ink on paper, 54 leaves mounted in a pair on 27 loose-folded silk boards, collectors' seals, wooden covers(1)each rubbing approximately 24.4cm x 13.5cmProvenance: Private collection, London; has been through three collectors, before being acquired by the current owner's father.Note: This is a preface composed by Emperor Taizong of Tang (598AD-649AD) for Xuanzang's (602AD-664AD) publication in the calligraphic style of Wang Xizhi (303AD-361AD) collected by Huai Ren the monk. The summary of the composition of this work is explained on the first leaf of this ink rubbing.Xuanzang was a 7th-century Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveller, and translator. He famously travelled to India bringing Buddhist texts to China. On his return in 645AD, Xuanzang was greeted with much honour by Emperor Taizong of Tang. He retired to the Hongfu Monastery in the then Chang'an City (now Xi'an) and devoted his energy to translating Buddhist texts until his death in 664AD. In celebration of Xuanzang's extraordinary achievement in translating the Buddhist texts, Emperor Taizong of Tang composed the content of the ink rubbing in this lot, entitled 'Da Tang San Zang Sheng Jiao Xu'- The Preface of Xuanzang's Holy Teaching. There was a monk, Huai Ren, of the Tang dynasty who also lived in the Hongfu Monastery. He spent about twenty years collecting the famous Chinese calligrapher and writer during the Jin dynasty, Wang Xizhi's calligraphy by each word of Emperor Taizong's 'Preface of Xuanzang's Holy Teaching', coming out with this collection of ink rubbings. Together with this lot is a written note dated 9 Sep 1972 attributed to Ge Jieping (1912-1999), a contemporary calligrapher, painter, epigrapher, poet, and connoisseur of cultural relics, calligraphy and painting. Ge transcribed the collectors' seals and attributed the first collector of this ink rubbing is Zhang Jinggui of the Ming dynasty. A comparable example with extensive collectors' annotations is in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, object no. Zeng Ta ??367N.
THOMAS JEFFERSON (1743-1826): SEA LETTERTHOMAS JEFFERSON (1743-1826): SEA LETTER FOR THE SCHOONER FANNY & CATHERINESigned by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison, June 7, 1804.
33 x 28 1/2 in. (Framed).
Note on the reverse from Bauman Rare Books: The printed sea letter for the schooner Fanny & Catherine, signed by Jefferson and countersigned by Secretary of State James Madison, and finished in hand by Jedediah Huntington, New London Collector of Customs. New London, Connecticut, June 7, 1804. original broadside, measuring 20 by 16 inches, matted and framed with contemporary line and stipple engraved portraits of both Jefferson and Madison.
Original sea letter issued to Commander Chauncey Barnard, vetting the Fanny & Catherine for departure from New London to Barbados, "laden with livestock provisions," boldly signed by Jefferson and Madison.
The "sea letter," printed with the same text in four columns in French, Spanish, English and Dutch, was issued to those ships that sailed the Atlantic as a guarantee of United States protection of both the vessel and her owners in foreign waters. Every American-owned ship was required to keep its letter as part of her papers. The dates shown on sea letters are no those on which the President and Secretary of State signed them, but rather the dates that the Collector of Customs entered information for a particular ship upon leaving port. Blank forms were signed in advance by the President and Secretary of State and sent to the Collectors, who would then fill in the details as occasions arose. New London boasts the oldest continuously operating customhouse in the United States, where this sea letter was issued. Original paper seal intact. Generally quite clean, six fold lines, one mildly affecting the bottom of Jefferson's large signature.

In the Steuben line in 1934. Dimitroff p.75. Pheasant was popular and examples are numerous. “For a designer who was said to have disliked cut glass, Carder certainly produced a lot of it. His cut designs of the post-1918 period, in contrast to the 1903-15 group, are bold and unconventional. They are nothing like the designs created by his American competitors.” P. 163 Dimitroff. In faceted pieces Carder used cutting to shape the outline of the glass.
See Fig. 2.40, p. 24 of Dimitroff where it is stated: “Relatively few brilliant cut items were designed by Carder at Steuben.” Further, at p. 256 the author states: “Carder’s deep, brilliant cut pieces are just plain rare in any shape or in any color.”
In Frederick Carder: Portrait of a Glassmaker by Paul V. Gardner at p.28 the author states: His skilled cutters produced about 200 decorative patterns on elaborate console sets, stately covered jars, monumental centerpieces, and a few table services. Among the rarest cut pieces are an ornamental peacock, pheasant, eagle, and Pegasus, a fanciful concept of the fabled winged horse.
“Steuben made many articles in pressed glass--ashtrays; Lincoln and Washington Head plaques with metal bases; eagle, pheasant, gazelle, duck, and pigeon figurines (later cut and polished to remove the mold marks);” p. 178, American Art Nouveau Glass by Albert Christian Revi.
Seen at p. 41 of article Carder Steuben Glass by Robert Mueller, in Glass Collectors Digest, Volume XIV, Number 6, April/May 2001. At p. 43, Some of Carder’s most impressive cut engraved work appears on figural animals, such as the pheasant, eagle, and pigeon. These table display sculptures were mold pressed, then hand cut to add details to the design.
Shown in 1926 House and Garden ad by Steuben Glass Blown and molded(id) at Steuben Furnaces, Corning, N.Y. AD labeled Precious pieces of Modern Glass hand wrought in the old tradition. Inscription reads The crystal birds are a triumph of glass making art.
In Steuben Seventy Years of American glassmaking by Perrot, Gardner and Platt, the authors say p. 55: In addition to the pigeon, cut crystal eagle, pheasant, duck and peacock table ornaments were made. These objects were among the few Carder Steuben pieces in which the basic shape was formed in a mold and the feathers and other details added by the glass cutters after the piece was annealed.
In The Complete Cut and Engraved Glass of Corning by Estelle F. Sinclaire and Jane Shadel Spillman, the author’s state at p. 198: Such art objects as the Carder-Steuben birds illustrate another characteristic Carder use of cutting: as texture or background. In the Steuben eagle, cutting reminiscent of the hollow or St. Louis diamonds suggests the texture of feathers.
A pair pictured at p. 153, of Encyclopedia of American Cut and Engraved Glass by Albert Christian Revi. At p. 150 author says, “Beautifully cut crystal pheasants were made in pairs as mantel ornaments.”

In this opulent decanter dating from the extravagant roaring twenties, Carder combined his ever-popular iridized surface with a base glass that has a bi-colored appearance. Although in its controlled, curving profile and,,,reflects a basic style upon which Carder had always relied, it also has qualities relating to the contemporary Art Deco style. Its ribbed form, for instance, emphasizes the linear design qualities that were integral to Art Deco. The variegated color ... relies upon the property of certain glass formulas to change color depending upon the amount of heat they received during the fabrication process. In other words, this ...bi-colored appearance does not result from the use of two colors of glass, but from varying the thickness of the glass ...Jade has a particularly rich and appealing quality, derived in part from the surface iridization, as seen Collectors Choice Review, Number 43 from Rockwell Museum.
