SEVRES PORCELAIN "FEUILLE-DE-CHOUX"SEVRES PORCELAIN "FEUILLE-DE-CHOUX" PLATES, 6 Assembled Set of Six Sevres Porcelain "Feuille-de-Choux" Dinner Plates, variously marked: all with interlaced L marks, various painters, various dates, one marked in black underglaze with date mark for 1780, and with additional 1920s iron red inventory number for the Gatchina Palace-Museum Reserve, No. 422i. Each: 9.75" diameter. Provenance: From a 140 East 56th Street estate. Note: This pattern was so popular in Europe that the Russian imperial court placed orders for it in the 18th and 19th centuries, ultimately producing their own version which became known as the Great Peterhof Banqueting Service at the Russian Imperial Porcelain Factory during the period of Nicholas I (1825-1855). The Gatchina Palace inventory number and Sevres date number on this plate indicate that it may have been part of the original purchase by the Tsesarevich and Grand Duke Paul Petrovich (later Emperor Paul I) and his wife Maria Feodorovna from the Manufacture de Sevres in May of 1782. The plate likely remained at Gatchina until the revolution and was sold abroad in the 1930s.

CADWALLADER LINCOLN WASHBURN (1866-1965),CADWALLADER LINCOLN WASHBURN (1866-1965), FRED DAVIS'S GARDEN IN CUERNAVACA, OIL ON CANVAS, 25.5" H X 26" WCadwallader Lincoln Washburn, (1866-1965) Fred Davis's garden in Cuernavaca, Oil on canvas Signed lower right: Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn Oil on canvas Dimensions: 25.5" H x 26" W Provenance: The Collection of Frederick W. Davis Private Collection, Southern California, by descent from the above Other notes: Cadwallader Lincoln Washburn was known as "the silent artist" and was quoted as saying "deafness may sometimes be an inconvenience but never a handicap". Primarily known for his mastery of "capturing the spirit of the subject" in his more than 900 drypoint etchings and numerous paintings, he had an incredibly varied life and career as not only an artist but a journalist and enthusiastic naturalist. Washburn lost his hearing at age five and attended Gallaudet College in Washington, DC, an institution for the hearing impaired, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1890. While he originally planned to study natural science and entomology, enlivening his essays with illustrations of spiders, bees, and caterpillars, he discovered a love for drawing at Gallaudet. He went on to study architecture at MIT, and even though he considered this choice a compromise, he won a First Award in Design. Still favoring a more artistic path, Washburn later studied art with William Merritt Chase in New York and traveled to Europe along with Chase and other students, studying with Albert Besnard in Paris and with Joaquín Sorolla in Madrid. During this trip, Washburn became interested in etchings, likely inspired by some of Whistler's etchings seen in Venice, and through trial and error, taught himself and created his first drypoint etching in Paris in 1903. He exhibited regularly at the start of the twentieth century in both Europe and the USA. As he mastered the art of etching, he also became a war correspondent, along with his brother, for the "Chicago Daily News," covering the Russian Japanese War of 1904-05. Washburn later traveled to Mexico in 1910 to study architecture and Mexican culture, and while there, covered the Madera Revolution in Mexico from 1910-12. After spending his winters in Mexico, Washburn moved to California, where he exhibited 50 prints at the Panama Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco in 1915, and won a gold medal. By 1937, failing eyesight forced Washburn to give up etching. Undaunted, he returned to oils and produced some beautiful paintings, marked by a fluid, brushy technique and with an emphasis on light and atmosphere. Washburn married in 1943 and settled in Maine. He returned to studying insects, arguing for the intelligence and communication skills of spiders, bees, and caterpillars. His essay entitled "The Mind of a Spider" became required reading in the 1940s in the Washington D.C. public schools! The last part of his life was spent in Maine, where he died on December 21, 1965 at age 99. "His incredibly varied experiences gave his work an authenticity and universality seldom matched by any modern artist. However great he was as an artist, and he was truly great, he remains most fascinating as a man." RARE SILK AND METAL THREAD 'POLONAISE'RARE SILK AND METAL THREAD 'POLONAISE' RUG, ISFAHANApproximately 6 ft. 3 in. x 4 ft. 2 1/2 in.
Note: The above offered rug is illustrated in F.R. Martin, History of Oriental Carpets before 1800 , Vienna, 1808, plate X. It is described as follows: "The charming carpet that is represented on plate X belongs to Count F. Wachtmeister (late Minister of Foreign Affairs and Chancellor of Universities of Sweden) at Tistad house. For several generations it has been at his mothers, the Wrangel family, and is still called the Wrangel Bridal Carpet, since all the daughters of the house were married standing on it. The first known owner was Count Wachtmeister's mother's great great grandfather, Anton Jacob Wrangler, born 1679, who took and active part in the naval battles in the time of Charles II, and especially distinguished himself in 1719, when with the man-of-war "Wachtmeister" he tried to obstruct the Russians at Sandhamm, but was taken prisoner, and only returned to Sweden in 1722 from Moscow. Later he became an Admiral and was awarded the first Count Wrangel of Sausis."
As early as the 15th century, silk rugs were being produced in Persia. By the 16th century, and certainly by the time of Shah Tahmasp (1524-1576) rugs and carpets were often enriched with a brocading of metal thread. The weaving of such fine silk rugs and brocades continued in the time of Shah Abbas (1587-1628). On ascending to the Safavid Throne he established special workshops in Kashan and Isfahan for the production of fine silk carpets. Though now known to have been made in Persia, these carpets were once believed to be Polish origin and were called "Polonaise" carpets, because one of them featured in the exhibition of 1910 in Munich, bears the arms of the Royal house of Poland. However, a document in the Warsaw archives establishes that it was part of an order executed in Kashan in 1602.
Many silk rugs of the Shah Abbas period were also woven with additional brocaded threads of silver or silver-gilt. Often they were made not only for the Safavid courts, but also as gifts for visiting foreign dignitaries. There are many references to 17th century silk rugs throughout European sources, notably Paul Simon, a Polish Carmelite father visiting Kashan in 1608, who describes rugs of silk, gold, brocades and velvets. John Fryer also visited Isfahan in 1676, tells of rugs "both woolen and silk intermixed with gold and silver, very costly, which are the peculiar manufacture of this country". In 1603 and 1622 there are accounts of a Persian embassy bringing brocaded and silk rugs to Venice, four of which are preserved in the treasury of Saint Mark's Cathedral.
