Autographs of WWII Generals FourAutographs of WWII Generals Four 4-Star and One 5-Star Generals Lot of 5 including: Lyman L. Lemnitzer Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Washington TNS 1961; Mark W. Clark TNS The Citadel letterhead 1965; Leslie R. Groves Major General associated with the Manhattan Project TNS 1945; Omar Bradley TNS 1966; and Lucius D. Clay TNS 1965. All are thank-yous for letters or responses to requests for autographs. 1p Washington DC 17 May 1961. Reply to request for photo and autograph from L.L. Lemnitzer Chairman Joint Chiefs of Staff on JCS letterhead. Lyman Louis Lemnitzer (1899-1988) graduated from USMA in 1920. He achieved the rank of Brig. General in the early days of WWII and by the end helped negotiate the Italian and German surrenders. Following the war he was assigned to the Joint Chiefs' Strategic Survey Committee before commanding the 7th ID in Korea. He became Chief of Staff of the Army in 1957 and was appointed Chairman in 1960. He got tied up in the politics of Cuba and only served one term as Chairman. He became Supreme Allied Commander of NATO in late 1962 a post he held until his retirement in 1969. 1p Charleston SC 4 Mar. 1965. On Office of the President of The Citadel letterhead. Letter indicates that he inscribed and signed maps and is enclosing them with the letter signed by Mark W. Clark. Clark (1896-1984) was the son of a career officer. He graduated USMA in 1917 where he was known as ''Contraband'' for his ability to smuggle prohibited sweets into the barracks and served in France in WWI. Although he graduated 110/139 from West Point - not terribly distinguished - his abilities gained the attention of distinguished generals during and after the war and he rose rapidly through the ranks. Early in WWII he attained the rank of Lieut. General the youngest to do so and command of the Fifth Army. He took command of the United Nations in Korea and upon his retirement in 1954 became president of the Citadel. 1p Washington DC 1 Sept. 1945. Thank you signed by L.R. Groves. Leslie Richard Groves (1896-1970) attended MIT for two years before transferring to USMA from which he graduated in 1918. He served briefly in France during WWI but most of the war was spent in Engineer's School. When he was with the Office of the Chief of Engineers he was responsible for overseeing the construction of the Pentagon and in Sept. 1942 he was placed in charge of the Manhattan Project designated an Engineering project as a cover. He managed the establishment of plants (Oak Ridge Hanford Los Alamos etc.) which had to be built and operated secretly and dealt with the large numbers of civilians employed at all levels of the project. 1p Washington DC 5 Jan. 1966 on Omar Bradley's General of the Army stationery. Omar Nelson Bradley (1893-1981) graduated from USMA in 1915 an institution he nearly did not attend since he placed second in the state qualifying exams. 59 of those who graduated from that class attained a general's rank including the 5-stars Bradley (the last to hold the rank) and Dwight Eisenhower. Bradley's personal star rose during WWII. Ernie Pyle referred to Bradley as the ''GIs General '' a nickname that stuck for the rest of his career although Pyle may have been more impressed than the GIs. After the war Bradley worked in Veteran's Administration helping with the health care and education benefits for GIs. He became Army Chief of Staff in 1948 and the first Chairman of the Joint Chiefs in 1949. His fifth star would come the next year. When North Korea invaded the south in 1950 he was responsible for mobilizing a military greatly reduced from its WWII peak. Bradley retired in 1953 but his policies shaped the course of the war. 1p New York 30 June 1965. Thank you for good wishes signed by Lucius D. Clay. Lucius Dubignon Clay (1897-1978) graduated from West Point in 1918 and spent the next two decades in various engineering posts. During WWII he did not see combat but kept the French harbor of Cherbourg open so materiel could flow into Europe. After the war he was military governor of the US occupation zone and ordered the airlift of goods into Berlin when the Soviets decided to blockade the city. After retiring he went into politics serving Eisenhower and several other presidents. This letter was written shortly after he took over the Republican National Finance Committee. Condition: Generally very good but all ink slightly blurry as if they encountered more than just household humidity.

General James Longstreet GroupGeneral James Longstreet Group of Five CDVs Lot includes four different common Anthony/Brady views of General Longstreet in uniform with a scarce post-war view in civilian clothes taken soon after the war. Three of the military views are engravings and one is a copy shot. None are autographed. ''Old Pete'' became a Major General in October 1861 and gained accolades commanding a division in 1862. With the Army of Northern Virginia??Ts reorganization Longstreet assumed command of the vaunted First Corps and could claim a large share of the victory at Fredericksburg. He was detached at Suffolk early in 1863 and missed the fighting at Chancellorsville. At Gettysburg Longstreet led the right wing and vehemently protested Lee's decision to attack with Pickett??Ts Division on July 3. Post-war many blamed Longstreet for the defeat although Lee never publicly lost confidence in his old ''war horse.'' The later hollow victory at Chickamauga can largely be credited to Longstreet but Army of Tennessee politics and a burning desire for independent command found him cast-off in charge of the dismal Knoxville Campaign during the winter of 1863-4. Longstreet gratefully returned to Lee in time to engineer a bold counterattack at the Wilderness on May 6 1864 where he was severely wounded. Longstreet returned to corps command at the end of the war and surrendered at Appomattox. ?Old Pete? remained the most visible Confederate luminary in the highly charged post-war examination of the causes leading to defeat. Longstreet died in 1904 and cast a long shadow as the last of the Confederate high command. Condition: Cartes are uniformly G+. showing minor edge wear and soiling.
