- TOMMIE RUSH - RED FADE OVAL DAFFODIL
TOMMIE RUSH - RED FADE OVAL DAFFODIL VASESigned, , Blown and hot sculpted glass, etched, 14.5h x 6.5w x 5.5d. Tommie Rush began her career as an assistant to glass artist Richard Jolley. She soon became an artist in her own right and continued to share a studio with him after they married in 1988. She produces functional work, mainly vases and bowls, in layers of shimmery muted colors that are sandblasted to a fine, matte surface texture. "I want my work to convey the human touch and a link with nature…I work in the vessel format because I enjoy designing and using well-made functional objects. There are many considerations that come into play when I start to work on a new series such as the color palette I will use, the interplay of form and the surface treatment and ultimately how the object will be used…I feel we live in a world that is becoming less personal and I view my objects as a link to something handmade and very individual and personal. I want my pieces to be held, touched and used to make the everyday more enjoyable. I also have to confess to the fact that I am an avid gardener, especially of flowers, and I am selfishly on a quest for the perfect vase for every flower.

(101 X 64.1 CM.)After Jacob Lawrence (American 1917-2000), 'Olympische Spiele Munchen 1972', Two Color Lithographic Posters,, Jacob Lawrence was an African American painter known for his portrayal of African American historical figures. His most well-known works include the series of Haitian General Toussaint L'Ouverture, Harriet Tubman and Frederick Douglass. Lawrence taught at the University of Washington. His works appear in collections all over the country, including the Museum of Modern Art, The Whitney Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art, among many others. One of many artists asked to design posters for the 1972 Olympic Games, Jacob Lawrence chose to commemorate the involvement of African American athletes by showing all Black athletes running a track race. This imagery and the timing of the work were historically important since these were the first games held in Germany since the 1936 games where Jesse Owens won four gold medals. Lawrence's work had the added significance of coming on the heels of the 1968 Mexico Olympics, where Tommie Smith and John Carlos, while on the podium for their gold and bronze medals respectively, protested human and African American rights by donning black gloves and raising their fists. Dimensions: Unframed: 39 3/4 x 25 1/4 in. (101 x 64.1 cm.)
