- WILLIAM IV BRASS-INLAID ROSEWOOD, PARCEL-GILT
WILLIAM IV BRASS-INLAID ROSEWOOD, PARCEL-GILT AND VELVET TUFTED UPHOLSTERED DAY BED, TOGETHER WITH A LATER COPY35 1/4 x 6 ft. 11 in. x 28 in. seat height 18 1/2 in.
Note: These sofas are reputed to have come from the Nelson family, in which case they may possibly have been commissioned by the 1st Early Nelson (d. 1835), brother of the famous Admiral, Lord Nelson, who was given Trafalgar Park, Wiltshire by a grateful nation in memory of the victory at Trafalgar in 1805. In 1829 the Earl married as his second wife, Hilare Barlow. The Grecian sofa is inlaid with brass "Buhl" inlay in the French manner, very like the furniture supplied by the Dublin cabinet-makers and upholsterers, John and Nathaniel Preston to the 2nd Earl of Belmore for Castle Cool, Co. Fermanagh, from 1815. In particular the inlay relates to that on the rosewood tops of the set of four center tables and larger circular table in the Salon, (see H. Montgomery-Massingberd and C. Sykes, Great Houses of Ireland , London, 1999, pp. 230-231 and 241).
Condition
Both in good, overall condition with minor nicks and wear throughout. One with a restored paw foot. Both lacking some buttons on the upholstery and could use a good cleaning. Beautifully inlaid and carved, grand scale. Structurally sound. One is a well executed later copy, made in the very late 19th or early 20th century.
Notwithstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

AFTER JOHN PRESCOTT KNIGHT
THE MEETING OF NELSON AND WELLINGTON Oil on panel24cm x 19cm (9.5in x 7.5in)Note: The circumstances of the meeting between Wellington and Nelson were recalled by Wellington in conversation with the noted diarist John Wilson Croker at Walmer Castle on October 1st 1834. In September 1805 Wellesley had just returned from India and was due to meet the Secretary of State in the Colonial Office at Downing Street. On entering the room he immediately recognized Nelson and since they were kept waiting by the Secretary of State they conversed for three quarters of an hour. Nelson was killed at the Battle of Trafalgar later that year.It is not clear whether our painting is a copy of the original painting by Prescott Knight or the engraving by S W Reynolds of 1864
