- EARLY SCRAPBOOK OF BLACKSTONE THE MAGICIAN
EARLY SCRAPBOOK OF BLACKSTONE THE MAGICIAN PHOTOGRAPHS....Kitchen, Inez (Inez Nourse). Early Scrapbook of Blackstone the Magician Photographs. Kept by Blackstone’s first wife, Inez Nourse (later Kitchen), and filled with nearly 500 candid images of Blackstone and his “gang” on some of the troupe’s earliest cross-country tours. Images depict Blackstone performing an overboard packing box escape, dressed for his show with his company, and in other professional poses, but primarily depict personal, joyful moments off stage. Several pages filled with real photo postcards of William S. Hart, Charlie Chaplin, Rudolph Valentino, and other film stars of the era, one or two signed. Several candid images show Pete Bouton at Chaplin’s legendary studio. Most images date to the 1920s. Oblong 4to, being a stock album, most pages bearing five or more images, the majority mounted with photo corners. Rear board damaged but holding. A unique and personal record of the triumphant Blackstone tours of the 1920s, the first steps on his climb up the ladder of fame. Should be seen. As much a personal travel album as anything else, the vernacular photos in this collection show Blackstone and his family – including his first wife, his brother Pete, and other members of his company – touring California and playing the roles of tourist as well as they played their parts on stage. Scenes in the scrapbook show the company at the Cave of the Winds, outside Thayer’s Magic Shop (holding a Talking Teakettle and Talking Vase), at various farms (including an ostrich farm), in front of theaters and movie studios, relaxing at various beaches, the Selig Zoo, as well as capturing moments with Blackstone’s favorite wolfhound, his vanishing camel, assistants behind the theaters dressed for the show, and countless other never-before-seen scenes.

- 18TH C. NEOCLASSICAL EUROPEAN GOLD &
18TH C. NEOCLASSICAL EUROPEAN GOLD & AGATE CAMEO BROOCH...Northern Europe, Neoclassical period, ca. 18th to early 19th century CE. A stunning, hand-carved agate cameo of ovoid form set in a gold brooch. Sculpted from creamy white agate that nicely contrasts the rich grey background, the beautiful cameo displays the image of Cupid - Greek Eros - the Roman god of love riding a biga led by a pair of rearing lions. Facing left, the charming, winged deity grasps the reins of his fierce felines with 1 hand, while raising a crop in the other. The male and female lions lunge forward on their hind legs, driving forth the riding child. An abstract gold border of swirling palmettes further adorns the gorgeous cameo. Size (brooch): 1.7" L x 1.1" W (4.3 cm x 2.8 cm); (cameo): 1.1" L x 0.8" W (2.8 cm x 2 cm); gold quality: 75% (equivalent to 18K); weight: 11.3 grams
The Neoclassical period saw immense northern European interest in the Classical world, in part inspired by the budding science of archaeology. Artists looked to the deep past for inspiration but brought an imaginative sensibility to their depictions of it. The motif of Cupid riding, taming, or subduing a lion or lions was popular in both Classical and Neoclassical art as the image of the god of love triumphant over such a ferocious beast was intended as an allegory for the notion that "love conquers all," or in the original words of Virgil "omnia vincit amor."

- CHINESE TANG POTTERY LOKAPALA W/ SANCAI
CHINESE TANG POTTERY LOKAPALA W/ SANCAI GLAZE, TL'DEast Asia, China, Tang Dynasty, ca. 618 to 907 CE. A fantastical mold-formed pottery guardian figure known as a lokapala with a serious expression wearing elaborate armor and robes as he stands triumphantly on a recumbent ox, all adorned in vibrant sancai glazes of marigold and emerald hues. He is adorned in greaves and a split tunic skirt with billowing back panel and flared sleeves on his arms. He places his left hand on his hip, bending the arm at the elbow, as he holds up his right hand, which is clenched in a fist, likely to have previously held a weapon such as a sword. Turning slightly right, his helmeted head exhibits painted features with beady eyes beneath narrowed brows, a broad nose, high cheekbones, and fleshy lips enveloped by liberal remains of a sweeping moustache and a short goatee. Size: 7.9" W x 16.8" H (20.1 cm x 42.7 cm)
Lokapalas were demonic guardians from Buddhist tradition that were believed to protect the deceased, and often grouped in a collection of 4 tomb figures composed of a pair of lokapalas and a pair of civil officials to represent each of the cardinal directions. These figures were one of the few Buddhist themes depicted in Chinese funerary iconography. The faces of these lokapala are often painted to look like foreigners to represent the cultural exchange and spread of Buddhism from other parts of Asia. This may be Virupaksha, Guardian King of the West, both fearsome and wrathful- trampling the ox underfoot as a sign of his might.
The Tang Dynasty was a thrilling time in Chinese history, when trade flourished along the Silk Routes and unified China was the richest country on earth. Chang'an (now Xi'an) was the Tang capital, and it was one of the most cosmopolitan cities on earth, filled with foreigners who had travelled to China to trade; the influence of foreigners and talented native Chinese, combined with the economic prosperity brought on by trade and the new religion from India, Buddhism, created a powerful cultural milieu where poetry and other forms of art flourished. This figure exemplifies the foreign influences on the Tang Dynasty as it corresponds to Buddhist warrior deities that assume a mortuary role in China but also serve as protectors of Buddhist temples, known as "Protector of the Burial Vault" or "Protector of the Burial Ground."
This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report is available to the buyer upon request.

He is adorned in greaves, a split tunic skirt with billowing back panel, and dragon head shoulder pads. - 10TH C. INDIAN RAJASTHAN RELIEF LION,
10TH C. INDIAN RAJASTHAN RELIEF LION, ELEPHANT, CONSORT...South Asia, India, Rajasthan, ca. 10th to 13th century CE. A remarkable figural relief sculpture, meticulously carved from sandstone to depict a lion, an elephant, and a female consort. Posed as if climbing up the wall, the ferocious feline looks back over its shoulder to face left as the comparably petite elephant stands below it, wearing a slender headband and also gazing left. The sensual consort or apsara stands to the right, displaying a slender, scantily clad body with voluptuous breasts. She holds an object in both hands and gazes downward, her heavenly visage framed by elongated ears, bulbous earrings, and an elaborate coiffure, as collar necklaces adorn her chest. A special example from Rajasthan, in northeastern India, which has a unique artistic tradition that is rarely seen in Western collections. Size: 8.6" W x 17.4" H (21.8 cm x 44.2 cm); 20.2" H (51.3 cm) on included custom stand.
Surviving ancient reliefs and carvings from monuments, religious sites, tombs, and palaces - being some of the most durable forms of art - inform us about the beliefs of ancient peoples throughout the world and human history. How remarkable that virtually all cultures have felt the need to express their creative sides in this vein.
According to Pushkar Sohoni in "Old fights, new meanings: Lions and elephants in combat" (Res: Anthropology and aesthetics 2016/2017, vol. 67-68: 225-234 pp.), "For over a millennium in South Asia, the visual trope of a triumphant lion vanquishing one or several elephants has been common in architectural sculpture, both in the round and in relief... In the rather limited scholarship on this motif, diverse interpretations have been offered. Although its presence has remained fairly stable through time, there exist many minor variations on this motif, including the use of leonine creatures variously described as vyalas or yalis, and the incorporation of other fantastic creatures known popularly as makaras in such combats. In South India, the myth of the fantastic composite animal called the Sarabha takes this imagery yet further. Yet, the simple image of a lion victorious over one or more elephants was situated very strategically within certain architectural programs for given periods and places."

- MOCHE FINELINE STIRRUP MUSICIAN HOLDING
MOCHE FINELINE STIRRUP MUSICIAN HOLDING CONCH SHELL, TL...Pre-Columbian, North Coast Peru, late Moche to early Wari (Huari) culture, ca. 700 to 1000 CE. A fascinating pottery stirrup vessel in the form of a musician figure clasping a conch shell trumpet in his hands, staring intensely forward with the characteristic Moche diamond shaped eyes. The umber surface is painted with intricate white patterning - abstract zoomorphs at his shoulders, and a pouch is slung over his back. The conch shell was a significant life-giving force from the ocean that the Moche venerated and plays a role in the mythical adventures of their deity, Ai Apaec. In one tale, Ai Apaec fights a monster in the form of a strombus (conch) shell at the bottom of the ocean. Ai Apaec is triumphant and offers the empty shell to the owl god of night. Conch trumpets were often played during ceremonies to venerate Ai Apaec and other deities. Size: 8" L x 4" W x 7.5" H (20.3 cm x 10.2 cm x 19 cm) For a similar example, please see the Art Institute of Chicago's website, reference number: 1955.2304. This piece has been tested using thermoluminescence (TL) analysis and has been found to be ancient and of the period stated. A full printed and bound report will accompany the item upon purchase. - 18TH C. TIBETAN GILT TANTRIC / WRATHFUL
18TH C. TIBETAN GILT TANTRIC / WRATHFUL DEITY HAYAGRIVA...**First Time At Auction**
Central Asia, Himalaya region, Tibet / Nepal, ca. 18th to 19th century CE. A fabulous gilt brass tantric and wrathful deity known as Dharmapala, manifesting as Hayagriva , standing upon a pedestal, his feet crushing prone figures of a nude man and woman set upon a lotus pedestal. The deity's face is frightening, with bared teeth, and flared nostrils under glaring eyes, and snakes wrap around his body, a horse head at the top of the headdress, and wielding a staff with vajra (dorje) terminals in his hand. The statue is hollow, but the underside is sealed with a copper panel stamped with a double vajra (visvavajra). Often these devotional statues were filled with paper prayers or relics then sealed! Size: 6.75" L x 3" W x 9.45" H (17.1 cm x 7.6 cm x 24 cm)
Dharmapala are "protectors of the faith" ritualistically used in the monastery's Cham ceremonies depicting the triumph of Buddhism over "demons" that once ruled Tibet. The Cham dances were performed to commemorate the introduction of Buddhism by Padmasambhava in the 8th century CE and its victory over the animist Bon religion. The fearsome visage was created to protect the faith from demonic forces of the former religion as well as eliminate any obstacle that stood in the way of the path toward Enlightenment. Hayagriva is one of these protectors and worshipped as the patron deity of horse merchants- the characteristic horse head protrudes from the headdress. Hayagriva is usually shown as a horse-headed deity, but in one myth he challenges the demon of vice, Rudra, to battle and Hayagriva enters Rudra's anus, destroying the demon from the inside out, the horse head emerging from the skull, and the triumphant Hayagriva then uses Rudra's body like a garment.

- 18TH C. INDO-PORTUGUESE IVORY STATUETTE
18TH C. INDO-PORTUGUESE IVORY STATUETTE OF MARYSouth Asia, western India, Ceylon (modern-day Sri Lanka) or Goa, Indo-Portuguese culture, ca. 18th century CE. A beautiful ivory carving of the Virgin of the Immaculate Conception depicted draped in long robes as she holds her hands together in prayer and stands atop a crescent moon - a reference to the Book of the Apocalypse in the New Testament - and the winged head of a cherub, all supported by a 20th-century gilt and gessoed wooden base. The province of Goa in western India was under Portuguese control from 1512–1961, forming a nexus in trading routes that circumnavigated the earth. Goan craftsman were renowned for their supple modeling of ivory (likely exported from Mozambique) into Christian icons, which feed the appetite for luxury products in Europe, as well as furthered evangelical missions throughout Asia and the Americas. Size: 3.6" W x 9.3" H (9.1 cm x 23.6 cm) Size: 4.5" W x 12.9" H (11.4 cm x 32.8 cm)
According to the Victoria and Albert Museum, "Ivory sculptures were locally produced in large numbers in Portuguese Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon). Usually for an European clientele, their style of carving combines Indian or Sri Lankan with European traditions...From the sixteenth-century, the Portuguese were active as traders and later as rulers in Sri Lanka and Goa (on the west coast of India). Ivory carving had a long tradition on the Indian subcontinent, and elaborate works of art were made, particularly as diplomatic gifts, often presented to Western rulers. Most of the ivory would have been exported from Mozambique in East Africa. Ivory sculptures were produced in large numbers in Portuguese Sri Lanka (formerly called Ceylon). The Virgin Mary was often standing on the crescent moon, triumphant over a dragon, both symbols derived from the Book of the Apocalypse in the New Testament.. From the sixteenth century onwards, the four main missionary Orders, the Augustinians, Jesuits, Dominicans and Franciscans, built churches and aimed to convert the inhabitants of India. The ivories would assist in the presentation of Christian imagery, as well as being exported back to churches, convents and private collectors in Europe."
This is an ESA antique exempt piece of ivory and cannot be sold internationally or to anyone residing in the states of California, Hawaii, Illinois, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Oregon, and Washington. We guarantee that the piece is over 100 years old.
