- SILVER DRESS CANECa. 1890-Well-proportioned
SILVER DRESS CANECa. 1890-Well-proportioned silver crook handle fashioned in a “Bec-de-Corbin” or crow beak shape with a wider, flattened and plain back extending, on one side, in a shorter, straight and vertical neck, and, on the other, in a stubby and pointed nose with foliage. The neck itself is segmented and starts with a diadem-like foliage matching the one on the nose to extend in a banded ring with a laurel leaf central part followed by a broader and paneled segment. Authenticated with two tiny French hallmarks, it comes on a well-figured calamander shaft and a metal ferrule. It is impossible not to like this cane, which echoes the 18th century, Age of the Enlightenment taste with a graceful Gilded Age twist. In any case, it brilliantly balances form and function and is a delight to hold and behold. H. 3 ¾” x 2 ¾”, O.L. 35 ½” Calamander or coromandel is a valuable wood from Sri Lanka and Southeast Asia. It is a hazel-brown color, with black stripes (or the other way about), very heavy and hard. It is also known as Macassar ebony or variegated ebony and is closely related to genuine ebony, but is obtained from different species in the same genus, one of these is Diospyros quaesita Thwaites, from Sri Lanka. The name "calamander" comes from the local Sinhalese name, kalu-medhiriya, which means dark chamber, referring to the characteristic ebony black wood. It is used in furniture, luthiery and for high-grade canes and walking sticks. Calamander has been logged to extinction over the last two to three hundred years and is no longer available for new work in any quantity. Furniture in calamander is so expensive and so well looked after that even recycling it is an unlikely source.
- DON BALKE (B. 1933) "WINTER WREN"Don
DON BALKE (B. 1933) "WINTER WREN"Don Balke (North Carolina, B. 1933) "Winter Wren" Signed lower right. Original Watercolor on Illustration Board.
Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. Rain Forest 33c Winter Wren stamp issued March 29, 2000.
The melodious song of the Winter Wren defies its plain appearance. A small, roundish bird with a short, stubby tail, this secretive bird is easily identified by its delightful chimp-chimp call and rapid series of high trills. The Winter Wren displays brown plumage, with darker shades along the flanks and a lighter buff on its breast and underparts. Its eyebrow stripe is short and narrow, and its wings feature distinctive barring. A denizen of coniferous forests, this tiny bird is found among dense undergrowth, wooded hedges, and boreal swamps and bogs. Although the Winter Wren favors spruce and fir forests, it is a ground-feeding bird and is occasionally found in cultivated areas. In constant motion, this sprightly bird probes among rocks and undergrowth for spiders, ants, beetles and slugs. The Winter Wren may build its nest in a tangled, upturned tree root, underneath a stump, in a brush heap or in a rocky crevice. Unlike other wren species, the Winter Wren does not nest in an enclosed cavity such as a woodpecker hole. The male builds several nests of twigs, grass and moss, leaving it up to the female to decide which one is best. The young are fed by both parents and leave the nest about 19 days after hatching. Sometimes another female settles into one of the decoy nests. If there is sufficient food, the male becomes polygamous, taking a second mate.

- 3RD C. ISLAMIC SASANIAN GOLD RING AGATE
3RD C. ISLAMIC SASANIAN GOLD RING AGATE INTAGLIO STAGAncient Near East / Central Asia, Sassanian (Sasanian / Sasanid), middle Sassanian Empire, ca. 3rd to 7th century CE. A beautiful gold ring with a large raised bezel housing a square Sassanian eye agate intaglio incised with a buck oriented to the left with his head boasting a massive rack facing the opposite direction - flanked by calligraphic flourishes, likely of Middle Persian script. The impressive animal stands atop 4 slender legs beneath a powerful body, as a short stubby tail extends from his posterior and a pair of ribbons project outwards from his neck. The agate stone itself is dark chocolate brown to black on top with white and caramel brown inclusions along the sides, creating an stunning, natural frame for the ancient animal. Size (ring): 1.2" Diameter x 0.8" W (3 cm x 2 cm); (intaglio): 0.6" L x 0.6" W (1.5 cm x 1.5 cm); gold quality: 83% (equivalent to 19K+); weight: 14.7 grams; US ring size: 8
The intaglio is cut into a square shape, perhaps to fit the ring, and is attached to the thick gold band via a shoulder of tiered granules on one side, creating an elegant, asymmetrical silhouette.
Sasanian stamp seals with the same motifs can be found at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under accession number 74.51.4413 and the Louvre Museum under principal number AO6242.

- ETRUSCAN LEADED BRONZE DANCING SATYR
ETRUSCAN LEADED BRONZE DANCING SATYR FIGUREEtruria, northern Italy, ca. 6th to 5th century BCE. A fine leaded-bronze satyr figure cast via the lost wax (cire perdue) process, in a dynamic pose as if dancing. The satyr is nude with small genitalia, and short tail, his right leg stepping forward, slightly bent and arms raised. His visage presents with characteristically pointy ears, wide incised eyes, a stubby nose, a linear mouth, all topped by a thick curly coiffure. Rather than a beard, he has a pair of lumps on his chin. This figure is well preserved with a dark green patina and sharp, naturalistic details- note the abdominal muscles as he twists his torso. Size: 2.25" L x 2.6" W x 4.5" H (5.7 cm x 6.6 cm x 11.4 cm); 5" H (12.7 cm) on included custom stand.
Satyrs were powerful symbols in ancient times, associated with the joy of the Bacchanal. The consumption of wine was an important social activity and satyrs were oftentimes added to decorative items to signify the owner's affiliation with the cult of Bacchus. Themes of the god and his followers were particularly popular during the early part of this time period, as control of the Mediterranean was shifting from Greece to Rome.
