EDWIN WILLARD DEMING (AMERICAN, 1860-1942) WINTER LANDSCAPE WITH NATIVE AMERICANS ON HORSEBACK Oil on academy board. Signed (artist's cipher) 'E.W. Deming' (lower right).
Edwin Willard Deming (American, 1860-1942)
Edwin Willard Deming was an American painter and sculptor. While in his teens, Deming traveled to Indian territory in Oklahoma and sketched extensively. Determined to become a painter of Indians, he enrolled at the Art Students League, then spend a year at the Academie Julian in Paris studying under Gustave Boulanger and Jules Lefebvre. His active career of painting and illustrating took him repeatedly to the lands of the Blackfoot, Crow, and Sioux, as well as to Arizona and New Mexico. After the turn of the century, Deming devoted more time to sculpture but also began work on a series of romantic murals of Indian life, which were subsequently installed in the American Museum of Natural History and the Museum of the American Indian in New York.

ARTHUR HOEBER (AMERICAN, 1854-1915) "THE MEADOW AT SUNSET, 1893" Oil on canvas. Signed 'Arthur Hoeber 1893' (lower right). Period giltwood frame.
Catalogue Note: Arthur Hoeber, a prolific writer, illustrator and landscape painter, was born in New York City. From boyhood, he displayed a particular talent for drawing and sketching, and continually practiced in water colors. One of his pictures was accepted by the American Water Color Society when he was only fourteen years old. Hoeber studied in the night schools of Cooper Union and then entered the Art Students League, where he studied under James Carroll Beckwith.
In 1881, Hoeber set off for Europe with letters of introduction from the noted actor Lew Wallack to his brother-in-law Sir John Everett Millais. Millais recommended that Hoeber study at the Ecole des Beaux Arts under Jean-Leon Gerome and then with Gustave Courtois. During his six years there he became an active member of the colony of American artists in residence. Like them he summered in Normandy and Concarneau, Brittany. He made his debut at the Paris Salon in 1883, and showed again two years later.
Upon his return to the states Hoeber was a regular exhibitor at the National Academy of Design (he later became an Associate Member), received a prize at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo in 1901. He held memberships in the Salmagundi Club, the Players and Lotos Clubs. He spent numerous summers on Cape Cod and Long Island where he showed a particular interest in sunsets and marshlands.
The turn of the century saw Hoeber settled in Nutley, New Jersey. He became the most prominent landscapist of a growing community of artists there. During this period Hoeber wrote rather prolifically on the arts and was the art critic for the New York Times. He made regular contributions to the New York Globe, Harper's Weekly and various other leading monthly magazines as well.

- EUGENE HENRI CAUCHOIS (FRENCH, 1850-1911)
EUGENE HENRI CAUCHOIS (FRENCH, 1850-1911) "LATE SUMMER REPAS" Oil on canvas. Signed 'H. Cauchois Aout 1874' (lower left).
Catalogue Note: The Flemish idiom of flower painting during the first decades of the 19th century combined meticulous draftsmanship enhanced by life-like colors. This style never quite lost its appeal as
the 19th century progressed, especially in France, but by the mid-19th century, one can see the emergence of a new variety of flower painters liberated from the realistic botanical approach of their traditional forerunners. Albeit a brief period, French flower painting reached a pinnacle of excellence before the Impressionists' emphasis on decomposition of light or the ruthlessly synthetic approach of many of the other movements such as the Nabis at the turn of the century overwhelmed the market.
As the century progressed, particularly the French School favored a more casual placement of an artful entanglement of garden flowers along a ledge or on the ground. This required great skill to execute and was extremely popular in the 1860's. For the first time in memory, flowers in a more natural setting did not carry the heavy burden of specific botanical or allegorical associations and esoteric language that had been de rigeur previous centuries. In addition, the gradual loosening up of the brushwork gave the finished work a more lifelike feeling.

Clarence Eytinge was a lithographer with an office at 218 Fulton Street. His firm, Fern & Eytinge, published views of New York City in the 1850s, and his brother Sol Eytinge Jr. was a noted illustrator.
“Built in the late 1790s and remodeled a century later, No. 206 Front Street was the location of the Howell family businesses for well over 100 years. It first served as a grocery, providing staples such as flour, sugar, and spirits to customers who bought fresh produce at the Fulton Market. It later housed the Howell’s famous military store, one of New York’s leading suppliers of guns and gunpowder at the turn of the century,” according to the plaque on the building. The building is now part of Cannon’s Walk, a pedestrian area across from the Fulton Market in South Street Seaport.

HENRY RANKIN POORE (1859-1940), THE BRIDGE - CLOSE OF A CITY DAY Title: Henry Rankin Poore (1859-1940), The Bridge - Close of a City Day Medium: oil on canvas Dimensions: 48 x 76 Frame dimensions: 52 1/2 x 80 3/4 x 1 3/4 Notes: Born on the east coast, and raised in California, Henry Rankin Poore moved to New York in 1876. He studied for a year in the National Academy of Design Antique School, studied in Philadelphia at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts under Peter Moran, traveled to New Mexico in 1882 to study and illustrate the Pueblo Indians for the U.S. government, and made a similar trip West at the end of the 1880s.
In 1883, after graduating from the University of Pennsylvania, Poore left for two and a half years to Europe, where his teachers included William-Adolphe Bouguereau. In England, he became enamored of fox hunting, and the depiction of hunting dogs became a standard subject for him.
After a second European trip to France and England in the early 1890s, Poore returned home to become professor of composition at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. In 1896, he married Katherine Goodnow Stevens, moved to Orange, New Jersey, and beginning around the turn of the century, Poore spent summers at the art colony at Old Lyme, Connecticut. He developed a new subject, hazy, soft landscapes without animals during this time. Poore published Pictorial Composition and the Critical Judgment of Pictures in 1903, which he described as a “handbook for students and lovers of art”. In it, he recommended both painters and photographers consider how to draw the viewer “into the picture” as he did.

LOUIS APOL (1850-1936) DUTCHLouis Apol, (untitled) hauling firewood, oil on panel, 7" h x 10.5" w. Note: A prominent representative of the Hague School, Louis Apol specialized in winter landscapes. His winter scenes often included structures like fences or bridges to remind viewers of humanities presence within the natural world. In this painting, Apol uses loose brush strokes to depict a man hauling firewood through a snowy lane. The piece is illuminated by the soft light of a late winter afternoon. Like his counterparts in the Barbizon School, Apol worked to paint the natural scenes around him as they really were, demonstrating the shift from romanticism to realism at the turn of the century. Apol made a significant contribution to the work of the Hague School and many of his pieces can now be found in The Rijksmuseum Amsterdam and the Gemeentemuseum Den Haag.
