General-in-Chief of the Union Army during the last part of the Civil War (1864-1869) and the 18th President of the United States (1869-1877).Lot includes ALS and print. ALS is 3p 8vo dated May 4 1883 at New York City addressed to the Duke of Argyl (probably George Campbell 8th Duke of Argyll 1823-1900) for the purpose of introducing him to J.D. Cameron who served as Secretary of War under Grant at the end of his second term and as a U.S. Senator from Pennsylvania at the time of writing. Grant says the senator and his family plan to take an extended sojourn in Europe and describes Cameron as among [his] most cherished personal as well as political friends. He closes by thanking the Duke for the pleasant recollections of my visit to your Country place a visit which likely occurred during Grant's world tour following the end of his presidency in 1879. Signature U.S. Grant in black ink.Print is an 1860s hand-colored wood engraving of Grant as lieutenant general by J.W. Orr. 8.25 x 11 in. Condition: ALS in very good condition with no chipping or separation and crisp clearly legible text. Only issue is a visible outline of the print that transferred to the letter while the two were stored together. Print with water staining from top to bottom on right side.

Document is the appointment of a Kansas Postmaster, Charles Phillips (who later went into business with a man who left the partnership to exhibit Billy the Kid's finger). Also signed by James Marshall, Postmaster General, a colorful character in his own right. Measures 12-1/2" x 16-3/4". This document is one of several dozen important signed pieces in today's sale that were part of a large collection of American historical documents from 1650 through WWII.
