French Bronze Figure of the "Diana of Versailles", fourth quarter 19th century, after the antique traditionally attributed to Leochares, ca. 325 B.C., the dark brown-patinated figure with gilt quiver, h. 14-3/4". Provenance: Private collection, Sarasota, Florida. The first or second century Roman copy of the Greek "Diane Chasseresse", as it is also known, was given by Pope Paul IV to Henry II in the late 1550's (with the not-so-subtle allusion to Henry's mistress, Diane de Poitiers). Originally displayed at Fontainebleau, it was moved to the Louvre in 1602. Louis XV installed the statue in the Grande Gallerie of Versailles, but it was returned to the Louvre in 1798, where it remains today.
