- W. GROPPER "THE OPPOSITION" LITHO,
W. GROPPER "THE OPPOSITION" LITHO, SIGNED L/RWilliam Gropper (American, 1897-1977), a major painter of Social Realism and illustrator of political cartoons, was born in New York City in 1897. He studied with Robert Henri and George Bellows. He took realistic art and turned it into pungent critique of the ills of modern society. He spoke of the hypocrisy of its leaders, most notably members of the government in Washington. At the same time, his sympathy for the laborer, the displaced person and the underdog gave his art a humanitarian warmth that muffled any propagandistic shrillness. His incisive views are still relevant as we approach the 21st century. His works are in most major collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, Whitney Museum of American Art, and the Metropolitan Museum. Framed, not examined out of frame. Frame size: 16" high, 19 1/4" wide. Tiny spot in upper left margin.

- Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky
Ellis Wilson (American/Kentucky 1899-1977) "Grinding Workers: New Jersey Defense Plant" oil on plywood signed lower left 16 in. x 20 in. Provenance: Gift of the artist to a close friend New York City and then as a gift to the current owner. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of this painting will benefit the Red Cross Haitian Relief Fund. Note: Born to a working class family Ellis Wilson grew up in the close-knit African-American community of Mayfield Kentucky. After studying at the Art Institute of Chicago he moved to Harlem then a thriving cultural enclave for African Americans. As an artist Wilson earned critical acclaim exhibiting with the prestigious Harmon Foundation and from his work for the Federal Arts Project of the Works Progress Administration (WPA). He earned the Guggenheim Fellowship in 1944 on the strength of his New Jersey Defense Plant series of paintings. In 1952 Ellis Wilson won the Terry Art Institute Award which afforded him travel to Haiti. This experience profoundly affected the artist's work in terms of style and reveals a heightened use of vibrant color.
