US CONSTITUTION, NEW HAVEN GAZETTE, 1788 The New Haven Gazette, dated February 14, 1788, publishes its first account of Massachusetts ratifying the Constitution. Also discussed is the celebration and who is going to attend. Also includes the first mention of the ship the "Federal Constitution on runners being pulled by 13 horses." Also covering the front page is a list of all states in convention, the inhabitants, black and white, so as to determine representation in congress, and a list of the 6 ratifying states and their vote count thus needing three more to secure complete ratification. Along with other ratifying news such as a false report of North Carolina ratifying the constitution and an account of Georgia actually doing the same on January 6th, 1788, one month earlier than this publication. Plus other news including China's wealth, but the poverty of its working class is the same as it was over 200 years ago; also the election of General James Jackson as governor of Georgia.

A book with a fantastic binding printed by a leading printer of the day. Encased in a clasped tooled Renaissance leather binding, with a nice example of Christ encircled by design and Latin prose. The verso has a king kneeling and looking up to God on a cloud with a city in the background. Exceptional stamping quality, full calf leather binding. Stamped on the front Biblia Sacra at the top and at the bottom the year 1569. The spine has 4 main ribs and 5 faux ridges. Between ridges are 6 fleur de lis in two rows stamped evenly in a line. Six free papers exist inside both the front and rear covers, the second free paper in from the front cover has an elaborate full page provenance manuscript written 'sum arnol di ab hol ten dantios cani anno 1577.'

THREE-MONTH JOURNAL, HANDWRITTEN FROM THE NEWBedford Whaleship America with Captain Charles Seabury in command. She sailed from New Bedford on April 1, 1849 and arrived in San Francisco on September 22 carrying passengers and supplies for the gold rush craze. The discovery of gold in San Francisco captivated many of the sailors involved in New Bedford Whaling and enticed them to travel to San Francisco to find gold. The journal mentions passing the Falkland Islands as well as going around Cape Horn where numerous whales were cited. Included in this is a newspaper article outlining the adventures of Captain JM Tilton who traveled to California to seek his fortune in the gold rush. 15" by 10". Nine two sided handwritten pages some shows staining and discoloration, very legible handwriting. A handwritten poem is also attached. There are some modern ink notations on the tops of the pages.

This is a post war image with Brownell in his GAR uniform, wearing all his war related medals and veteran badges, including the medal of honor. Brownell received the medal of honor, in 1877, which was the first medal issued to a civil war veteran. 12" by 10". Some chipping and paper loss to the edges. Minor discoloration. Along with a CDV of Cortland Ingraham, First Lieutenant in the New Jersey cavalry. 4 1/4" by 2 1/2". Shows staining.
