- 20TH C. HOPI POLYCHROME WOOD KACHINA
20TH C. HOPI POLYCHROME WOOD KACHINA BIRD-FACED FIGURENative American, Southwestern United States, Hopi, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden kachina doll depicting a large, bird-faced figure. Painted in yellow, red, white, and black pigment, the figure stands atop semicircular feet, wears a knee-length skirt, and holds both arms atop a red belt. The round-topped head features large, circular eyes, a massive avian beak, and a deeply peaked brow, all beneath 6 petaloid wooden feathers as well as a central line of real bird feathers. This kachina doll perhaps depicts the Wiharu White Ogre, a benevolent disciplinarian for Hopi children. Size: 8.25" W x 12.875" H (21 cm x 32.7 cm)
The Katsinam, supernatural beings who live in the high mountains of the San Francisco Peaks above traditional Hopi territory, speak to the Hopi through costumed dance and song. These dancers emerge from the round ceremonial kivas that are at the center of their communities, singly or in groups, and dance to the music of drums, rattles, and song. Katsina figures (katsina dolls, katsin-tihu), are made of cottonwood root to represent these supernatural beings. Cottonwood is culturally symbolic because the cottonwood tree, once abundant in traditional Hopi lands, grows where water flows - thus, looking across a landscape, lines of cottonwood trees denote a water source in the desert. After carving, the figures are painted all over with whitewash, made from kaolin clay, and then painted in brilliant colors. Originally these were done using yucca brushes. Many katsina are then decorated with other materials, like feathers, cloth, or fur. Katsina dolls are often given objects to hold which indicate their roles.

- SIGNED / DATED 1971 ADOLPH GOTTLIEB
SIGNED / DATED 1971 ADOLPH GOTTLIEB "NIGHT GLOW"Adolph Gottlieb (American, 1903-1974). "Night Glow" color etching and aquatint on Fabriano paper, 1971. Signed, dated, and numbered 40/65 in pencil on lower margin. A stunning piece by American Abstract Expressionist Adolph Gottlieb - among the artist's "Bursts" in which he simplified his imagery and zeroed in on "basic sets of polarities within the image." According to the Associated American Artists, "While the discs pulsate in the upper portion of the Bursts, configurations of brush strokes erupt below. Deeply bitten arc-like surfaces of the brush strokes . . . suggest a more unpredictable and violent action than the glowing pulsations of the discs . . . Gottlieb (1903-1974) posits two vital and opposing forces. And while each has the potential to subsume the other, he has discovered a unifying structure that allows them to function in a relationship of complementary equilibrium." (Associated American Artists 66) Size of image: 24" L x 17.5" W (61 cm x 44.4 cm) Size of frame: 35.25" L x 27.25" W (89.5 cm x 69.2 cm)
Adolph Gottlieb was a founding member of two groups of abstract artists: "The Ten" as well as "The New York Artist Painters" which included Mark Rothko, George L.K. Morris, and John Graham. He and Rothko wrote a letter to Edward Alden Jewell, the art editor of the New York Times, on June 7, 1943 that is generally considered to be the first formal statement representing the philosophy of the Abstract Expressionists.
Gottlieb's Pictographs, including his "Imaginary Landscapes" and "Bursts" among others, have been collected by esteemed museums since 1946. In addition, Clement Greenberg curated a Gottlieb retrospective exhibition in 1952; there was another at the Jewish Museum in New York in 1956, a survey at The Walker Art Center in 1963, and a joint retrospective at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Guggenheim Museum in 1968. Remarkably, his art was presented in 55 solo exhibitions and more then 400 group exhibitions. Honors include being the first American to win the Grande Premio of the Bienal de Sao Paolo (1963).
"Night Glow" sold at Swann Galleries for $3,900 on June 10, 2021 in Sale 2572 - Lot 2.

- YOSHITORA UTAGAWA WOODBLOCK "BATTLE
YOSHITORA UTAGAWA WOODBLOCK "BATTLE OF DAN'NOURA" 1861Yoshitora Utagawa (Japanese, active 1830-1880). "The Great Battle of Dan'noura" woodblock (triptych), Edo period, 1861. Marks: censor's seal aratame. A striking woodblock triptych by Yoshitora Utagawa depicting one of the most famous conflicts in Japanese history, the Great Battle of Dan'noura which ended the Genpei war between the Minamoto and the Taira during the 12th century. The three woodblocks are delineated in classic ukiyo'e style featuring characteristic birds-eye views, a penchant for strong line, and an appreciation for brilliant, saturated hues that are hallmarks of this fine Japanese artform. An impressive composition set in a custom frame under glass. Size of sight view: 13.5" L x 29.25" W (34.3 cm x 74.3 cm) Size of frame: 19.375" L x 40.625" W (49.2 cm x 103.2 cm)
Woodblock prints were created in Japan as early as the 8th century to illustrate texts. By the 18th century Japanese woodblock techniques had evolved, and the first polychrome prints or nishiki-e were commissioned for wealthy patrons of the Edo period. This period was known for marvelous woodblock prints of female beauties, kabuki actors, sumo wrestlers, and courtesans of the infamous pleasure districts. In time the repertoire expanded to include romantic landscapes, flora and fauna, and dramatic historical events such as the Battle of Dan-no-Ura. Woodblocks like Yoshitora Utagawa's played a major role in the West's perception of Japanese visual culture during the late 19th century when Japonism exerted a powerful influence on French Impressionists such as Degas, Manet, and Monet, Post-Impressionists including Van Gogh, even pioneering Art Nouveau artists such as Toulouse-Lautrec.

- PICASSO CHOUETTE (OWL) CERAMIC VASE
PICASSO CHOUETTE (OWL) CERAMIC VASE (1969)Pablo Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973). "Chouette" (Owl) ceramic vase, 1969. Edition 135/250. Reference: Alain Ramie Picasso Catalogue no. 604. Incised "EDITION PICASSO", "MADOURA" and edition number "135/250" as well as "EDITION PICASSO" and "MADOURA PLEIN FEU" stamps on raised applied pieces of clay on the underside. An exquisite Picasso "Chouette" (Owl) ceramic vase consistent with Alain Ramie's catalogue raisonne no. 604 - conceived in 1969 and executed in an edition of 250. The beautiful owl vessel was partially glazed and painted in hues of black, brown, and white. What's more the surface was carved so as to accentuate the owl's eyes and plumage, replete with repeated half moon shaped feathers. Finally, "EDITION PICASSO 135/250 MADOURA" is incised on the underside and the "MADOURA PLEIN FEU" and "EDITION PICASSO" stamps on raised pieces of clay are attached to the interior walls of the foot. Size: 11.2" H (28.4 cm)
Picasso was immensely fond of owls. Known for their wisdom and reliable vigilance, feathery owls appeared in virtually every medium Picasso touched. What's more, the artist loved to surround himself with his nocturnal friends; he even adopted an injured owlet that he kept as a pet in his studio!
Pablo Picasso collaborated with the Madoura pottery studio to create ceramic works for almost 25 years. Georges and Suzanne Ramie founded the Madoura Pottery studio in Vallauris, France. The Ramies are probably best known for their wonderful collaborations with Picasso which resulted in an impressive oeuvre of Picasso ceramics. PICASSO CERAMIC PLATE - "TAUREAU SOUS L'ARBRE" (1952)Pablo Picasso (Spanish/French, 1881-1973). "Taureau sous l'arbre" (Bull Under the Tree) ceramic plate, 1952 - Reference: Alain Ramie Picasso Catalogue no. 159. Ed: 500. Marked "EDITION PICASSO" in black as well as "MADOURA PLEIN FEU" and "EDITION PICASSO" stamps on underside. A beautiful white earthenware round plate decorated in oxidized paraffin (black) and white glaze that highlights Picasso's respect for bulls, animals that he admired for their muscular forms, impressive strength and energy, as well as intelligence. Picasso boldly rendered the bull in black and added subtle green tones and dots surrounding the rim to further imbue the piece with motifs that reflect the animal's vitality. Among the rare limited edition ceramics Picasso created with the Madoura pottery workshop in Vallauris in the South of France! Size: 8" in diameter (20.3 cm)
According to Picasso scholar Vicente Marrero, "In the work of Picasso, the bull is like one of those Spanish rivers, turbulent and agitated, which lose themselves among the brambles, rocks, and reeds, only to reappear later at some other place further on, in plain sight. There are times when it appears that the bull is adumbrated even in the 'figures' of the painter, figures as profound as they are debatable and enigmatic" (Marrero, 83).

- PREHISTORIC MIMBRES POTTERY BLACK-ON-WHITE
PREHISTORIC MIMBRES POTTERY BLACK-ON-WHITE BOWLNative American, North America, Southwestern United States, Mimbres, Classic Period, ca. 1000 to 1150 CE. A bold black-on-white coil-formed pottery bowl of a hemispherical form with a round but stable base, gradually expanding walls, and a thick rim that surrounds the deep basin. The exterior is unpainted, exhibiting the buffware surface of the fired pottery- characteristic of Mimbres fine-line pottery. The basin is covered in a creamy white ground and overpainted in black linear and stepped triangular shapes, forms that may have been inspired by the dramatic geology of the Mimbres homeland. The vessel was overfired, leading to the black pigment becoming a deep, earthy red-brown color in areas- a very lovely example! Size: 8" Diameter x 3" H (20.3 cm x 7.6 cm)

- IMPRESSIVE NAYARIT CHINESCO POTTERY
IMPRESSIVE NAYARIT CHINESCO POTTERY SEATED NUDE MALEPre-Columbian, Western Mexico, Nayarit, Chinesco, Type C, Protoclassic period, ca. 100 BCE to 250 CE. An impressive pottery figure of a male shown seated with legs bent before him and arms crossed and resting on knees, all adorned in beige and black pigment on a red-slip ground. Hunching over, the ancient figure displays a slender body with wide hips and thick legs. His huge head presents a somber expression with heavy-lidded eyes, a curved nose adorned with a septum ring, and a straight mouth, all crowned by a helmet-like headdress. Though nude, the fascinating figure wears armbands on each arm, as well as a pair of beaded collar necklaces at the top of his chest. Stippling across his shoulders represents ceremonial scarification. Size: 8.3" W x 14.1" H (21.1 cm x 35.8 cm)
This "Chinesco" figure of the Lagunillas sub-style from the Nayarit region, is notable for the smooth burnished surface, painted ornamentation, and entranced expression. This style of sculpture is known as Chinesco by collectors because of its stylistic similarities to Chinese art. Clay figures like this one are some of the only remains that we have today of a sophisticated and unique culture in West Mexico - they left no above-ground monuments or sculptures, at least that we know of, which is in strong contrast to developments elsewhere in ancient Mesoamerica. Instead, their tombs were their lasting works of art: skeletons arrayed radially with their feet positioned inward, and clay offerings, like this one, placed alongside the walls facing inward, near the skulls. An effigy like this one may have flanked the entrance to a tomb in a way that archaeologists have interpreted as guarding. Some scholars have connected these dynamic sculptures of the living as a strong contrast to the skeletal remains whose space they shared, as if they mediated between the living and the dead.

- PANAMANIAN COCLE POLYCHROME EFFIGY VESSEL
PANAMANIAN COCLE POLYCHROME EFFIGY VESSEL JAGUAR HEADPre-Columbian, Central America, Panama, Gran Cocle culture, ca. 800 to 1000 CE. A lovely hand-built pottery jar with a rounded but stable base and a gently carinated body with a thick rim and a wide opening, decorated with abstract motifs and an applied head. The surface is slipped in a red and orange hue, the shoulder painted with black spiraling and angular shapes with solid bands of purple- the purple indicative of the Macaracas style. At the front below the rim is a projecting zoomorphic head with pointed ears, and bared teeth as a representation of a highly stylized jaguar, and opposite is a vertical spout aperture with a small opening in the tip. Size: 9" Diameter x 6.5" H (22.9 cm x 16.5 cm)
In the Gran Cocle Pre-Columbian kingdom, geometric design elements such as these were imbued with powerful symbolism, although the cognitive intent of these has largely been forgotten or is no longer known. Some researchers believe that the brightly colored Cocle ceramics refer to the contemporary belief system, which seems to have revolved a mythic "Rainbow Serpent" who was believed to be the original designer of these motifs.

- CHINESE HAN DYNASTY POLYCHROME GRANARY
CHINESE HAN DYNASTY POLYCHROME GRANARY JAREast Asia, China, Han Dynasty, ca. 206 BCE to 220 CE. An attractive granary jar, wheel-thrown with a flat base and a sturdy cylindrical body. Although faint, the original surface motifs are visible in areas - painted in a curvilinear and swirling pattern, perhaps a vine or cloud-form motif in beige hues atop the orange ground. The gray color of this vessel resulted from firing in a smoke-infused kiln and the surface decoration were painted on afterwards using mineral pigments and these are not protected by glaze - hence the faded nature. Vessels like these were placed inside of tombs, often holding offerings that were given to help the deceased journey through the afterlife. This is certainly fine condition after nearly 2000 years! - TALL GREEK GNATHIAN POLYCHROME NET LEKYTHOSMagna
TALL GREEK GNATHIAN POLYCHROME NET LEKYTHOSMagna Graecia, South Italy, probably Gnathian, ca. 325 BCE. An opulent pottery lekythos boasting a refined silhouette with an ovoid body, a sloped shoulder, an attenuated neck, and a collared rim, all sitting upon a discoid base as an arched handle attaches neck to shoulder edge. The sophisticated vessel is adorned with black and white applied pigments that nicely contrast the red terracotta ground, forming a complex decorative program comprised of a fine-line netted pattern that envelops the body and flanked above and below by a horizontal band of crested wave motif. Additional ornamentation beautifies the shoulder, featuring a register of palmettes, a row of repeated, curved lines, and a series of vertical striations that travel up the neck. A lustrous black glaze covers the top half of the neck, the rim, the handle, the bottom of the vessel, and the edge of the foot. Size: 4" Diameter x 8.6" H (10.2 cm x 21.8 cm)
This piece was most likely used for storing olive oil; however, beyond this utilitarian aspect, it has an attractive narrow body and finely painted decorative program, the net motif perhaps referencing sea waters, all amounting to quite a seductive example.

- GREEK GNATHIAN POTTERY BEAKED OINOCHOEMagna
GREEK GNATHIAN POTTERY BEAKED OINOCHOEMagna Graecia, South Italic Colonies, Apulia, Ignazia, Gnathian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. A fabulous example of a wheel-thrown pottery pouring vessel known as an oinochoe. The vessel exhibits a spool-form foot beneath the piriform body, a corseted neck, a 'beaked' spout flanked by a pair of lion head protrusions, and a slender handle arching high over the top and down to the midsection, all enrobed in lustrous, jet-black glaze. Embellishing the neck and upper body are rows of fugitive pigment in white, yellow, and red that show a row of tongues, a slender zigzag between pairs of incised lines, a strip of petite white dots, white meander patterns between 2 thick red bands, and a band of grapevine motifs. Size: 3.2" W x 7.9" H (8.1 cm x 20.1 cm)
Gnathia ware is named for the site where it was first discovered - the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is traditionally decorated with floral motifs in red, white, and/or yellow hues. Scholars believe that its production most likely was centered around Taras, with primary workshops in Egnathia and Canosa. The quantity and quality of Greek colonial Apulian potters increased significantly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports dramatically decreased. - TALL GREEK GNATHIAN POTTERY TREFOIL
TALL GREEK GNATHIAN POTTERY TREFOIL OINOCHOEMagna Graecia, southern Italy, near present day Ignazia, Gnathian, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. An attractive blackware pottery pitcher with a trefoil spout decorated via the Gnathian technique with fugitive red, white, and yellow pigments. The area opposite the handle boasts an elaborate grapevine pattern around part of the body, capped by several more decorative bands of spiral, dotted, and tongue motifs. Contributing further to its beautiful decorative program is the silvery iridescence that the black glaze has attained over the ages. A stunning example! Size: 5.9" Diameter x 10" H (15 cm x 25.4 cm)
Gnathia ware is named for the site where it was first discovered - the Apulian site of Egnathia. The black glaze ware is traditionally decorated with floral motifs in red, white, or yellow hues. Scholars believe that its production most likely was centered around Taras, with primary workshops in Egnathia and Canosa. The quantity and quality of Greek colonial Apulian potters increased significantly following the Peloponnesian War when Attic exports dramatically decreased. Apulian artistry demonstrates influences of Ionian (Athenian, Attic) conventions, as well as Doric (western colonial Greek) styles, with a palpable native Italian aesthetic.

- GREEK APULIAN POTTERY PLATE W/ LADY
GREEK APULIAN POTTERY PLATE W/ LADY OF FASHIONMagna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 325 BCE. A stunning red-figure plate on a raised foot featuring a "Lady of Fashion" wearing a saccos - head scarf - with pearl strands and hair pins, a drop earring, and a pearl necklace. Facing left, the elegant female displays a straight nose, a petite eye beneath a thick brow, pursed lips, and a spiraling tendril of hair that falls down the side of her face. Her profile head is encircled by a red band bordered by a circle of white laurel leaves, with tongues around the edge of the rim. In addition to the skillfully rendered red-figure painting, the artist added lovely white fugitive painted details. What's more, the black decoration has gained nice iridescence, particularly on the underside. In the field before her profiled visage are abstract vegetal and geometric designs. Adding a human element to the creation of this piece is the dark orb in the center, which formed because another plate must have been placed on top of this one during the firing process. Size: 5.8" Diameter x 1.3" H (14.7 cm x 3.3 cm)

- GREEK APULIAN KANTHAROS W/ LADIES OF
GREEK APULIAN KANTHAROS W/ LADIES OF FASHIONMagna Graecia, southern Italy, Apulia, ca. 340 to 320 BCE. An elegant kantharos (wine cup) boasting a pair of sweeping high handles with support struts, and thumb spurs. The flared cup's body sits upon a tall stem with a tiered foot. Each face of the exterior walls is beautifully adorned with a red-figure Lady of Fashion portrait wearing a saccos (head scarf) with pearl strands and hair pins, a drop earring, and a pearl necklace - all detailed with fugitive white and yellow-orange paint. A lustrous, black glaze envelops the interior, handles, stem, and foot. Size: 6.2" Diameter x 6.9" H (15.7 cm x 17.5 cm)
A kantharos (also cantharus) is an ancient cup form used for drinking/holding wine, possibly for rituals or ceremonial offerings; its shape most likely derived from a metalwork form. This piece is an iconic example of what is known as Type A - characterized by a deep bowl, a tall pedestal foot, and a beautiful pair of highly swung handles extending far above the lip of the vessel. Scholars believe that the kantharos was also an attribute of Dionysos, the god of wine who was also associated with fertility. Hence, in addition to being used during festive banquets, such vessels may have been used in ceremonial rituals to symbolize rebirth.
