- OUTSTANDING SALESMAN’S SAMPLE CANOEOld
OUTSTANDING SALESMAN’S SAMPLE CANOEOld Town Canoe Company (1903-present)
Old Town, ME c. 1925
48 in. long
The Old Town Canoe Company of Old Town, Maine, is a historic maker of canvas-covered wooden canoes. Incorporated in 1901, Old Town is the largest and most well-known American canoe maker and they are still in business today. The individual build records for Old Town’s canoes that were built prior to 1976 still exist and disclose that approximately thirty-five forty-eight-inch-long samples were made between 1922 and 1927. It is believed that Old Town rewarded its wholesale distributors with a free forty-eight-inch sample if they ordered a railway boxcar load of canoes, about forty full-size canoes. Distributors received two forty-eight-inch-long samples or one eight-foot sample if they ordered two boxcar loads. Thus, the samples were really used as “premiums” to recognize favored distributors, not routinely handed out to salesmen, though they are often called such. Old Town Canoe Co. was by far the greatest maker and distributor of “display” samples, which were also often referred to as “sign” canoes.
Display samples were not sold to individual buyers. Most were distributed prior to the 1930s and were placed in window displays or hung prominently in outfitter stores. Given the relatively low production numbers and disappearance through attrition, they are scarce and highly sought-after collectibles today. This represents one of the finest examples to come to market.

- RALPH ALBERT BLAKELOCK O/B MOONLIT LANDSCAPERalph
RALPH ALBERT BLAKELOCK O/B MOONLIT LANDSCAPERalph Albert Blakelock (American, 1847-1919) oil on wood panel, moonlit landscape, with heavily forested foreground and moon rising against a cloudy sky; the moon is reflected in the ground or possibly a pool below. Signed R.A. Blakelock lower right in red. Rococo style whitewashed giltwood carved frame. Authenticated by Norman A. Geske of the Nebraska Blakelock Inventory in 1976. Label verso for University of Nebraska Blakelock Inventory No. 909 (full record number is NBI-909-II). Additional label with handwritten inscription "Tennessee Fine Arts Center Nashville Tenn." 5 3/8" x 7 3/4" sight, 12" x 15" framed. Biography (courtesy Askart and Michael Zellman, 300 Years of American Art): Ralph Albert Blakelock studied briefly at Cooper Union, and at the Free Academy of the City of New York. In 1867, he first exhibited at the National Academy of Design. Primarily self taught, he declined his wealthy father's offer to pay for more extensive art schooling, and in 1869, embarked on a horseback tour of the West that lasted several years. He lived with Plains Indians, painting pictures of their villages, and traveled and painted through the Rockies and the Sierra Nevadas and in San Francisco and Mexico. His western paintings were in the Hudson River style, although they were rough and more painterly. Returning to New York, he developed what became his signature expression: quiet, moody, nocturnal scenes accented with bright colors depicting light, and trees silhouetted against the sky. He had a labor-intensive technique, which was building up of multi layers of thick paint, scraping some away, and "adding more to build a complex tonality". (Zellman 420). In 1899, Blakelock had a mental breakdown. He spent the final two decades of his life in a mental institution in New York. It was only in the final few years before his death that collectors began paying substantial sums of money for his work. Provenance: The living estate of Dr. and Mrs. Benjamin H. Caldwell, Nashville, TN, ex-Tennessee Fine Arts Center at Cheekwood. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

MCCARTHY (American 1924-2002) A PAINTING, "The Sioux Buffalo Run," 1973, oil on panel, signed and copyright dated L/R "McCarthy / © 73;" 23 1/4" x 35 1/4", framed with engraved brass plaque 34 3/4" x 47". Provenance: Cover image for "Western Paintings of Frank C. Mccarthy" by Frank Mccarthy and Frank Storz, released February 1974. Note: Thundering hooves kick up dust as fierce indigenous Plains hunters ride domesticated mustangs alongside wild, stampeding buffalo. A drama unfolds at right as a buffalo brutally retaliates. Known for his western fantasy art; Frank McCarthy is a celebrated American illustrator. Eventually moving to Sedona, Arizona, "...the Dean of Western Action Painters..." was invited to join the Cowboy Artists of America in 1975; a member for twenty-three years of his fifty year career as a commercial illustrator and artist of the Old West, and also an inductee of the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 1997. Frank McCarthy, in the present painting, once again, captures our imagination and fascination with an absolutely wild, wild west in this 1973 early western theme oil on panel painting.
