- CA. 1880'S JAMES HUNTER WILSON SHOOTER
CA. 1880'S JAMES HUNTER WILSON SHOOTER SADDLEThis is an original James Hunter Wilson Denver Saddlery 19th Century high-back mounted-shooter western saddle. James Hunter Wilson was born in Indiana in 1848. According to “Old Cowboy Saddles & Spurs” by Grethchen and Mike Graham, James Hunter Wilson was a saddle and harness marker during the American Civil War for the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. After the war he returned to Paxton, Illinois and opened a saddle shop. He later moved to Denver, Colorado, and in 1876 started using the J.H. Wilson Saddlery Co. Denver, Co. mark. Later in the 1920’s the Western Saddle Mfg. Co. bought out the Wilson Saddlery and continued the use of his famous J.H. Wilson name into the 1930’s. This saddle is marked on the seat, “J.H. WILSON DENVER, CO. SADDLERY CO.” in the early form. This saddle dates to the circa 1880’s and is in typical Western saddle form, marked by Saddle expert Dale E. Moore of Montana as the “mounted shooters” type of saddle, a fast growing sport in the West. The saddle features a wonderfully and professionally crafted black leather construction that shows two wooden and metal wrapped monel stirrups. The saddle shows a high back seat with expert tooling to the seat and the skirt. The seat size is 14" and shows a leather strap wrapped around the horn. The overall condition of this western saddle is good with no obvious signs of damage. The measurements of this saddle are 25" x 20" x 26 1/2".*
