Auction buying is wholesale and not the same as retail store or retail internet buying. There are no returns based on condition. Our auction items are mostly vintage, mostly from estates, and are not in perfect condition. The items are sold "as is", and we are acting as agents, not as principals. Accordingly, prospective buyers are entirely responsible for determining the physical condition of lots prior to and as a condition to bidding. Bidders are obligated to determine their level of interest in and value of the items based solely on their own review. To assist prospective bidders in this endeavor, we offer in person open-house preview days prior to the auction, and also provide written condition reports in response to emailed requests submitted to condition@woodburyauction.com at least two days prior to the auction. The printed catalog lot information is a best efforts presentation of our opinion, rendered on a time-sensitive schedule, and is provided for guidance only, without legal obligation, and does not constitute a "statement of fact". The absence of condition statements in a lot catalog entry does not mean that the item is in perfect condition or is without defects. Please understand that our duty is to present the items fairly for bidder consideration and that the bidder's duty is to make independent investigation of the condition of items before bidding.
- DELBERT BUCK FOLK ART SCULPTURE - COWBOY
DELBERT BUCK FOLK ART SCULPTURE - COWBOY WITH SADDLE**First Time At Auction**
Delbert Buck (Navajo, b. 1976). Mixed media folk sculpture (cottonwood, acrylic paint, string, and wool) n.d. Signed on underside of base. A lively hand-carved and hand-painted sculpture of a cowboy by self-taught Navajo artist Delbert Buck. Dressed to the nines in colorful Western garb with a wide-brimmed cowboy hat, a buttoned vest layered over a red shirt with stars adorning the sleeves, blue jeans, fringed chaps, and cowboy boots, this cowpoke holds a lasso in one hand and a saddle in the other. A wonderful piece by Delbert Buck whose love of rodeos has inspired fabulous sculptural figures like this handsome cowboy. Size: 5.75" L x 10" W x 19" H (14.6 cm x 25.4 cm x 48.3 cm)
Born in Shiprock, New Mexico, self-taught Navajo folk artist Delbert Buck began creating art at age nine. At age 12, Buck began created sculpture from found objects, and at age 14 he was represented by a gallery.
More about the artist: "Delbert got a young start as a folk artist. He began making sculpture from found objects at age twelve and was represented in a gallery by the time he was fourteen. It was in 1988 that Delbert's father Wilford Buck introduced his son to trader Jack Beasley, of the Four Corners area. With his father handling the boy's art business, Delbert says he didn't even know the value of money until he was in in his teens.
He assembles constructions from found objects and cottonwood limbs, then roughly carves and paints them. His first carvings were the toy guns and the small wooden horses he and his brothers used to make. His inspirations are many.
First there were the comic books that encouraged him to think it possible for a sheep to drive a car. As he aged, he drew on personal experiences, such as his rodeo bull riding, the colorful chaps he wore in rodeos, and his trips in a single engine airplane, to inspire his sculpture.
Delbert's art is humorous and even satiric. His cowgirls and cowboys ride be-speckled skunks, buffaloes, propeller planes, rocking horses, or giraffes, with a goat in chaps and hat, or maybe a monkey or dog, riding behind. A wagon filled with pigs, Dalmatians, or chickens is pulled by a booted pig or an oxen-sized dog. It might take Delbert three to four weeks to complete one of his larger pieces.
All of his carving is by hand. He uses acrylic paint and a wide variety of found materials. Paper, fabric, yarn, and wool all find their way into his work. He even sews the clothing on his figures, as taught by his mother…" (Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian)
Delbert Buck's sculptures have been collected by the Smithsonian Museum of American Art, the Wheelwright Museum of the American Indian, and other esteemed art instititions.
Delbert Buck has modestly stated, "I'm just an ordinary guy. I'm surprised how people have responded and that I can make a living from my carving." The art world has certainly received Buck favorably, and we agree with their assessment wholeheartedly!

- SIR HUBERT VON HERKOMER GENRE PAINTING
SIR HUBERT VON HERKOMER GENRE PAINTING (1879)Hubert Von Herkomer (German born British, 1849-1914). Oil on canvas genre painting, 1879. Signed "H.H. 1879" in red at lower left corner. Also signed "H. Von Herkomer" on verso. A charming painting by Sir Hubert Von Herkomer depicting an elderly gentleman and a young woman convening at a stone memorial topped by a large cross in a rural setting. The man - dressed in a blue coat and buttoned vest over a white collared shirt, brown pants, wooden (perhaps Dutch) shoes, and a large hat - leans against the stone monument and holds a long cane. The young maiden - donning a red apron over her blue dress with a white Dutch cap matching her broad white collar - kneels at the left, holding a ceramic pitcher. The pair flank this memorial or gravesite, perhaps exchanging some comforting words. This touching scene is rendered in Von Herkomer's signature realistic style with a vibrant palette. A wonderful example of Von Herkomer's genre paintings, mounted in an attractive custom frame. Size (sight view): 20.75" L x 16.2" W (52.7 cm x 41.1 cm) Size (frame): 25.4" L x 20.875" W (64.5 cm x 53 cm)
Artist Biography: Sir Hubert von Herkomer was a composer and film director as well as a fine artist best known for his genre paintings of poor, humble folk delineated in a realistic style. Born in Bavaria, his mother and father, a wood carver, emigrated to the United States in 1851, where they briefly lived in Cleveland, Ohio, and then moved to Southampton, England in 1857 before moving to Bushey in 1874. Herkomer went to art school in Southampton and also studied in Munich. In 1866, he studied at South Kensington Schools, and had his first exhibition at the Royal Academy in 1869. His painting titled "The Last Muster" (1875) earned him a position of high distinction at the Academy, and in 1879, he was elected an associate of the Academy; in 1890, he became an academician. Von Herkomer also founded the Herkomer Art School at Bushey in 1883 which he directed until 1904. Among his 500 students were notable artists such as Lucy Kemp-Welch, George Harcourt, Tom Mostyn, E. Borough Johnson and Roland Wheelwright. Von Herkomer worked in oils, watercolor as well as enamel, etching, and mezzotint engraving. Other honors include: associate of the Royal Watercolour Society (1893); full member of Royal Watercolour Society (1894); Slade Professor of Fine art at the University of Oxford (1885-1894); named "Ritter von Herkomer" by King Otto of Bavaria (1899) who also appointed him Knight of Merit Order of the Bavarian Crown; awarded Pour le Merite for Arts by Kaiser Wilhelm II. Herkomer also painted Queen Victoria on her deathbed as an alternative to the traditional wax mask. The painting depicted Queen Victoria half-length, wrapped in white tulle, surrounded by lilies and flowers, and holding a cross in her right hand. This painting is in the Royal Collection at Osborne House on the Isle of Wight, England, where it is displayed in the Pavilion Principal Stairs Vestibule. In addition, four of Von Herkomer's paintings are in the national collection at Tate: Found (1885), Sir Henry Tate (1897), Portrait of Lady Tate (1899) and The Council of the Royal Academy (1908). Furthermore, he received an honorary degree of DCL at Oxford as well as a knighthood by the king in addition to commandership of the Royal Victorian Order in 1907.
