Biography: Vincent Jean Baptiste Chevilliard was admitted to the Ecole Des Beaux-Arts in Paris in 1865 and presented his first work to the Paris Salon the same year. His teachers included Francois Edouard Picot and Alexandre Cabanel. Chevilliard was known for his paintings depicting humorous scenes from the daily lives of religious figures. Excellent condition. Frame with two losses to molding up to 4 1/2" wide with some re-gilding at areas of loss; other scattered small areas of loss, abrasion and wear.

MALTESE18th century oil on canvas portrait depicting a lady with dark hair and eyes, waist length, wearing a white dress with blue sash, within a black painted oval, with armorial or heraldic shield painted in the upper left corner. Maltese export license stating the painting was removed from Malta in 1978 with an ultimate destination of San Clemente, California pasted, en verso of canvas. Housed in a giltwood frame with projecting corners accented by carved rosettes. Painting: 30" H x 25" W. Frame: 39" H x 34" W.

Condition:
Painting has been adhered to a later canvas on newer stretcher. UV light reveals several spots of inpainting to chest and neck area along left side and line of inpaint just above subject's head. Other scattered inpainting to the background. Craquelure throughout. The oval appears to have been added later to mask paint abrasions probably caused by being in a previous frame with an oval opening; there is some cracking and tenting to paint along the oval in some spots. A few small light-colored spots, possibly bloom, near left edge of canvas. Scattered minute flakes and areas of grime. Frame in overall good condition with scattered loss to gilt paint, especially in lower left corner.

Signed "F. Hugo d'Alesi" lower right. Maison Cornier stamp, en verso of canvas. Housed in a period, possibly original giltwood frame with acorns and berries in relief, with original label for P. Hombert Fils, Paris, en verso. Sight: 17" H x 10" W. Framed: 22 3/4" H x 15 1/4" W. Note: this painting descended to the current consignor from Vicki Meche, granddaughter of the writer and mysticist J. Camille Chaigneau. The painting is accompanied by a circa 1880 carte-de-visite photograph of the painter, Hugo D'Alesi, who was a personal friend of J. Camille Chaigneau. An album containing another image of D'Alesi, along with one of his wife, is also included in this auction. Artist biography: "The painter and graphic artist known as Hugo d'Alesi was born Frederic Alexianu in Romania, but took French citizenship and worked mainly in Paris. He produced many tourism posters, for railways and travel companies, around the turn of the century." (Source: the Delaware Art Museum).

Both painting and frame in overall very good condition. 3/4" area of buckling to canvas in upper left corner and a few scattered spots of light grime. 1/2" area of loss to lowermost sight edge of frame; a few scattered tiny losses to frame's outer edges.

Biography: Arnold Marc Gorter was a student of the National Academy in Amsterdam, but traveled to Germany and France to paint professionally, finding great success. He painted numerous landscapes in the manner of the French Barbizon School, many of which were accepted into French annual Salons.

The assembled set includes 4 forks and 1 tablespoon with late 18th century Rochefort, France marks; 4 tablespoons and 3 forks marked for Paris first standard silver (.950) 1809-1819; 1 tablespoon marked for Paris first standard silver (.950) 1798-1809; 3 tablespoons with marks for French first standard silver (.950) circa 1838-1900; and 1 large soup ladle, 8 tablespoons, and 5 forks with marks for French first standard silver (.950) circa 1819-1838. Unmarked. Both mounted to wooden panels with hanging loops, en verso. Tiles approximately 13" H x 6 1/2" W x 1 1/4" D. Panels: 15" H x 9 1/2" W x 1" D. Late 19th/early 20th century. 3rd-4th items: Two (2) Emaux de Longwy, France enamel pottery items, including one (1) centerpiece bowl with scrolling foliate decorations on a blue ground, a scalloped rim, and two handles (2 3/4" H x 10 3/4" W); and one (1) square tile depicting a tropical scene with birds in a quatrefoil border on a blue ground housed in a wooden frame (9 3/4" square). All items in overall good condition. Majolica tiles with surface grime, scattered, minute areas of loss to surface (possibly in the making). Tile markings likely obscured by frames. Longwy items with crazing, minor losses to enamel.

The final drawing is signed “Daniel Wilkerson” and dated “March 89” to the lower right hand corner with the caption “Proof” to the lower left hand corner. Abraham Bogardus (1822 - 1908 New York) Half Plate Ambrotype City Street Scene. Circa 1850's. Rare early photograph of Ambrotype Studio and people gathered outside on boardwalk. Image depicts single to three story buildings with storefronts and signage reading- Baker & Sadler, Bakery & Confectionary, Drugstore with Ambrotypes Studio above, Bryant & Connelly, P. Hanes (cobbler), and Downey & Wilkerson Cabinet Makers. Clock above drugstore reads 'Jewelers'. 20 people are in the image. In half of Bogardus branded leather case that reads 'Bogardus Greenwich St Corner Barclay N-Y. Bogardus opened his first gallery in New York in 1846. He became very successful and in 1868 he assisted in the formation of the National Photographic Association and was its President for five years. Good condition with scattered craquelure and blemish to lower center. Plate measures 4.25x5.5" with viewable area measuring 3.5x4.5 in the oval mat. Overall measurements with the case are 4.75x6x.5".
