Fontaine, most notable for his Make Way for Ducklings sculpture on Newbury Street in Boston, Massachusetts, went to school at Tufts University studying Art History and English with painting classes at the Fogg Art Museum, and later a law degree from Harvard Law. Fontaine started his life as a lawyer, eventually leaving his firm to create art and travel.
