JOHN WOLLASTON (BRITISH, 1710 -JOHN WOLLASTON (BRITISH, 1710 - 1775) image 29 ½" x 24 ¼" Maria Burke. Oil on canvas, half length portrait, no signature visible, in original carved wood gilt over gesso ornate fame, overall 37" x 32 ¼". Provenance: commissioned by Richard Burke (father of the sitter and seventh generation great-grandfather of the current owner) in ca. 1750 to John Wollaston, who painted it in New York. Provenance: Held in the family collection since its creation; in the family tradition, the painting was stabbed by British soldier during the Revolutionary War; it was on custodial loan in The Smithsonian Institution in 1970's and later returned to the family.
The portrait is included in the official Phelps-Marshall Kinship genealogical book and specified commission to John Wollaston (p.140), by Nancy Sheppard McBride (maternal grandmother of the current owner), McClure Press, 1977 (book is not included in the lot).

FRAMED ANTIQUE NEEDLEWORK AND WATERFRAMED ANTIQUE NEEDLEWORK AND WATER COLOR MEMORIAL TO THE STANWOOD FAMILY, Circa 1805, worked in multi-color silk threads and watercolor, depicting a young boy and girl creating a floral garland beside the Stanwood family tomb beneath an elaborate weeping willow tree, names of the distinguished Stanwood family of Massachusetts and New York stitched to tomb's side panel, presented under églomisé glass in a molded gilt frame.
Leading the list of family members is that of Captain Lemuel Stanwood, born in Gloucester, Massachusetts in 1771. He became known for his bravery at sea when he was able to retake his ship after it had been taken by a "French Privateer." In 1793, he married Elizabeth Lamb and died at the early age of 30 in 1801.

Born in Vermont Thomas Wilder worked in his father's New Hampshire chair factory before branching out on his own doing ''...all kinds of Ornamental Painting''. By 1839 he was painting portraits in Vermont and New Hampshire. The subject of this portrait is Charles the fourteen-year-old son of Dexter Whittemore (born ca.1799) of Fitzwilliam New Hampshire. In the 1850 Census Dexter is listed as a merchant living with his wife and five children including Charles who is listed as one of two of his father's clerks.
