Walter Weber was a staff artist for "National Geographic" for many years. In the late 1920s, as a young man, he participated in the Crane Pacific Expedition to the Galapagos and on around the globe as team artist. Weber received the Conservation Service Award from the U.S. Department of the Interior in 1967 and his artwork was selected for the Federal Duck Stamp in 1944 and 1950.

THE LOG COVERS FROM WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 23, 1842 THROUGH MONDAY, JUNE 22, 1846 AND WAS PROBABLY WRITTEN BY HIRUM LUTHER, FIRST MATE. THERE IS NO SIGNATURE BUT THE AUTHOR MENTIONED IT WAS HIS 38TH BIRTHDAY ON OCTOBER 28, 1843. THE SHIP HAD 2 OWNERS W.L.B. GIBBS AND WILLIAM P. JENNEY. THE JOURNAL CONTAINS 131 HAND WRITTEN PAGES. IT HAS A LEATHER SPINE WITH MARBLED BOARDS. 13 1/2" X 8 1/4". IT IS IN OVERALL GOOD CONDITION. IT APPEARS SOME PAGES ARE TORN FROM THE BACK. THE FIRST PART OF THE BOOK DISCUSSES THE JOURNEY FROM FAIRHAVEN TO CAPE HORN. FINBACK WHALES ARE SIGHTED ON MARCH 31ST. MENTION IS MADE SAILING PAST THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS ON APRIL 27TH. ON JUNE 12TH 8 MEN ARE JAILED IN THE FORECASTLE FOR REFUSING TO MAN THE MASTHEAD. ON JUNE 26TH THE MEN ARE PUNISHED WITH A LASHING. TUESDAY JULY 18TH A WHALE IS TAKEN BUT THIS RESULTED IN A STOVE BOAT JULY 20TH, 2 MORE WHALES ARE TAKEN. ENCOUNTERS WITH OTHER WHALESHIPS LIKE THE "GEORGE WASHINGTON" ARE NOTED APRIL 15, 1844. THEY ARE OFF THE COAST OF PERU CRUISING FOR WHALES. APRIL 28, 1844 THEY ARE OFF THE COAST OF PANAMA. OCTOBER 29, 1844 A LARGE WHALE IS TAKEN AND THE LARBOARD BOAT IS BADLY STOVE. MET UP WITH THE ABIGALE OF NEW BEDFORD ON JANUARY 11, 1845. FEBRUARY 28, 1845 WHALES ARE TAKEN OFF THE COAST OF CHILE. THE CUTTING IN IS DESCRIBED. ON NOVEMBER 6, 1845 A LARGE GROUP OF SMALL WHALES ARE SIGHTED AND SEVERAL ARE TAKEN. MARCH 1846 STILL CRUISING OFF THE COAST OF CHILE. JUNE 28, 1846 LAST ENTRY, RETURNING HOME NOW OFF THE EAST END OF LONG ISLAND. 2400 LBS. OF SPERM OIL WAS TAKEN FROM A TOTAL OF 60 WHALES. THIS LOT COMES WITH A WELL DONE TRANSCRIPTION OF THE JOURNAL DONE BY THE THIRD GREAT GRANDDAUGHTER OF CHRISTIAN THATCH, THE THIRD MATE ON THE VOYAGE. THERE ARE NO WHALE STAMPS IN THIS JOURNAL. CYNTHIA LYMAN MODERN BRONZE OSTRICH SCULPTURE Massachusetts,d. 2007Animalier statue depicting a running ostrich with wings outstretched. Lyman studied in Paris and later with Boston artists George Demetrios and Peter Abate before travelling the world, making numerous trips to Africa and Asia for inspiration. After the death of her husband, Lyman befriended Dover artist Constance Pach who then traveled with her to the Galapagos and South America for further inspiration and animal research. Best known for her work of St. Francis of Assisi in Prouty Garden at Boston's Children's Hospital surrounded by carefully crafted animals. Other works can be found at the Boston Athenaeum, the Maria Mitchell Association of Nantucket, and the Nantucket Life Saving Museum.
