RARE RUSSIAN BRASS-MOUNTED MAHOGANY ARCHITECTS TABLE, IN THE MANNER OF DAVID ROENTGENThe hinged top fitted with a ratchet mechanism above a leather-lined writing surface and one drawer fitted with a sliding leather-lined surface and a secret inkwell drawer, flanked by candle slides, raised on tapering fluted legs ending in sabots.

Note: David Roentgen (1743-1807) was a German cabinet-maker who trained in his father's (Abraham) shop and ultimately inherited it in 1772. He was known for beautiful marquetry inlays and creating mechanical furniture. He had Queen Marie-Antoinette of France and Empress Catherine the Great of Russia as great patrons who encouraged him to great heights. In the late 18th century he was known for simple mahogany veneers inlaid with brass and fitted with secret drawers and a sophisticated mechanical interior. He had shops in St. Petersburg and Berlin and influenced many. This architects table is influenced by Roentgen's designs and cabinet-making skills.
Condition
The table sun bleached with a nice warm color. Repaired age split on the top. In good restored condition. The candle slides with fading spots. Expected nick, scuffing and general wear. Very fine quality, structurally sound.Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.
