- EDWARD S. CURTIS, THE NORTH AMERICAN
EDWARD S. CURTIS, THE NORTH AMERICAN INDIAN PORTFOLIO IX, 1913Edward S. Curtis, (1868 - 1952) The North American Indian Portfolio IX, 1913, 36 photogravures on Japanese Gampi tissue with original Van Gelder overmats signed in the plate below image: E. S. Curtis Featuring the Salishan, Chimakum, Quilliute and Willapa tribes of the Pacific Northwest. LIMITED EDITION: This Portfolio is from set #96, printed on handmade Japanese gampi tissue paper, quarto, original ¾ brown crushed levant by H. Blackwell of Boston, over beige linen-covered boards, original gilt lettered, with photogravure plates by John Andrew & Son of Boston after photographs by Edward S. Curtis, edited by Frederick Webb Hodge, Chief of the Bureau of American Ethnology, field research conducted under the patronage of J. Pierpont Morgan. PORTFOLIO: 36 large format photogravures, including a List of Plates reference that is hand letterpress printed on hand-made paper. Loose bound in a hand-made, 3-flap portfolio. Before embarking on his thirty-year odyssey of studying and photographing Native Americans in the summer of 1900, Curtis first made photographs of Indians in his adopted Pacific Northwest several years earlier. A professional studio portrait photographer by training, Curtis was also an avid outdoorsman and amateur landscape photographer. It was while pursuing these latter activities in the Puget Sound area surrounding Seattle that he began to photograph Native Americans and their daily life. He apparently started this work without a great deal of specific ethnographic intention, yet several of his early Native American images won multiple awards. The most acclaimed, "Homeward ", plate 318 in this portfolio, won both national and international accolades in 1898. portrait is that of Princess Angeline, plate 314. Named Kikisoblu, she was the oldest daughter of Chief Seattle, and is believed to have been the first Native American that Curtis photographed. She is also pictured in "The Mussel Gatherer", plate 313. Curtis created an evocative and unique visual record of North American Indian women, which are very prominent in this portfolio. Shown in portraits, the making of arts and in food gathering, is testament to the fact that Curtis was able to photograph Indian women so frequently, in such a variety of situations and activities and often with great intimacy, is a testament to his strong relationship with Native Americans and the great trust they placed in him. 36 photogravures on Japanese Gampi tissue with original Van Gelder overmats Dimensions: folio: 23 x 19 in. - POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY
POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY EDWARD BURDETT CIRCA 1830-1833 LENGTH 6.25". INCLUDES STAND.POLYCHROME SCRIMSHAW WHALE'S TOOTH BY EDWARD BURDETT, Circa 1830-1833, Signed on edge "Engraved. By. Edward Burdett.". Obverse titled "Wm. Tell. of. New York. Cutting. Boiling. And Fast to a Whale." Depicts a whaling scene of the American whaleship William Tell, aboard which Burdett served, and a whaleboat in pursuit of a surfaced whale. Faint "W" in sky above whale. Reverse titled "Friends. Of. New London. Homeward. Bound. Full.". Depicts the whaleship flying a large American flag off the stern, a long red-striped pennant from the mainmast and a "P O[?]" house flag from the foremast. Another whaleship is visible in the distance. The ship Friends is depicted on at least three other Burdett teeth, one that was part of the Kendall Whaling Museum Collection, one in the Mystic Seaport collection and the third presented earlier in this auction. As typical of Burdett's work, a vine wraps around the circumference of the base and the ships' hulls are deeply engraved. The serifed lettering is also the same as on other Burdett examples. Accompanied by a copy of a July 20, 1998 Scrimshaw Certificate of Authenticity issued by the Kendall Whaling Museum, reference no. 99-01, signed by Stuart M. Frank, Ph.D., Director, certifying the piece as a genuine sperm whale tooth and that the work is that of Edward Burdett. In the certificate's cover letter, Frank describes it as a "prime example of Burdett's later work and it may be the very last piece he ever did". Also includes several clippings and photographs of Burdett teeth. Dimensions: Length 6.25". Includes stand. Provenance: The Collection of Ian R. MacKenzie.Notes:We presume this tooth was created while Edward Burdett was onboard the ship William Tell , which left New York in November 1829 and returned to port in February 1833.Edward Burdett was a pioneer of American scrimshaw, and in his short but prolific career he produced what are widely considered masterpieces of the genre. He was born on Nantucket in October 1805, the son of a merchant sea captain. His first whaling voyage was aboard the Foster from 1822 to 1824. In successive voyages he sailed aboard the William Tell and the Montano . In November 1833, while serving as first mate onboard the Montano , Burdett was entangled in line, dragged by a whale overboard, and drowned.
