Mike Stidham spent his early years in Palm Desert, California, where he dreamed of becoming a desert painter. As a young teen, he began trout fishing in Colorado, selling his early watercolors through local fly shops, and he worked as a fishing guide in Idaho. Among his honors and accomplishments, in 1992 the artist produced the Saltwater Sportfishing Stamp for Texas and, for a time, held the IGFA record for a hammerhead shark taken on a fly rod. He says, “To me the painting is about the sense of place, the feeling of being there, the various colors of the rocks and rhythm and movement of the gravel bed.” Today, Stidham paints from his Sandy, Utah, studio as well as on the many fishing trips he takes to see, study, and pursue his subjects in their natural environment.

- FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861-1909), REGISTER
FREDERIC REMINGTON (1861-1909), REGISTER ROCK, IDAHO Peter Hassrick wrote, "Geological curiosities become the signposts for civilizations on the move. When the terrain is unfamiliar, natural landmarks guide travelers across uncharted reaches, serving as beacons in the wilderness. But as the paths become worn, so do the guideposts. They soon take on the etched identity of the people who pass and inevitably reflect the human failing to record that 'Kilroy was here."'
"Register Rock in Idaho served the Oregon Trail, and Remington's depiction of it embodies the whole story of Western migration. The bewildered Indian gazes in wonderment at the scribbled initials of an intruding civilization. The cow skulls tell of the journey's hardships for animals that did not complete the journey to greener pastures. This site was the resting spot for many wagon trains; here they spent the night and cooked a meal which may well have consisted of their own oxen."

- EAST TN POLICE TINTYPE AND CABINET CARDSGroup
EAST TN POLICE TINTYPE AND CABINET CARDSGroup of 2 large cabinet card photos and 1 tintype image relating to Bristol, Tennessee police officer Charles Porch (served late 19th/early 20th century). One cabinet card depicts Porch seated with a male friend (printed at Loargille, Johnson City, TN) and the other depicts Porch in his police uniform playfully raising a billy club at a friend, who is pointing a gun at Porch (printed at Vance's Art Gallery, Bristol, TN). The tintype depicts Officer Porch posing with a fellow officer, both in their uniforms. Cabinet cards measure 7 1/2" H x 5" W. The tintype measures 3 1/4" H x 2" W. History (courtesy of the Bristol Historical Association): Officer Porch witnessed the earliest recorded murder of a Bristol, Tennessee police officer in February 1903. The incident is all the more significant since it was perpetrated by a Bristol, Virginia police officer, Grat Walk. The incident as cited by the Bristol Historical Association and Frank Bickley, a Bristol Courier reporter, unfolded in the following manner - at 11:30 p.m., February 7, 1903, Walk crossed from the Virginia side of State Street and stood at the corner of Fourth Street. He yelled to Childress, who was standing in front of Knott's Bakery, talking to Charles Porch, a fellow Tennessee officer. As Officer Childress walked to the corner, Officer Walk continued to quarrel him. Walk then drew his pistol and fired two shots, both shots piercing Childress's body through his overcoat. As Childress fell, Walk fled across the street. Childress was carried into the Bob Clay Barber Shop, where he died almost instantly. Walk was in hiding for a week, then gave himself up to authorities. Grat Walk later managed to escape from jail after he was allowed to leave his cell "get a breath of fresh air". He remained at large for 7 years until he was recognized in Idaho by an officer in Alene, Idaho. Walk was eventually returned to TN to face trial. During the trial, Officer Charles Porch testified against Grat Walk's plea of self defense and stated Childress never pulled his gun on Walk. The trial concluded with Walk being found guilty of 2nd degree murder and sentenced to 20 years. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)

- TWO (2) AMERICANA BOOKS OF THE OLD WESTOffered
TWO (2) AMERICANA BOOKS OF THE OLD WESTOffered in this lot are two (2) Books of the Old West, "On The Border With Crook" by John C. Bourke and "Owyhee Cattlemen 1878 1978 100 Years In The Saddle" by Mildretta Adams. "On the Border with Crook" has long been regarded as one of the best firsthand accounts of frontier army life. More than simply an account of General Crook, Bourke writes with unparalleled detail of the landscape of the Southwest, impressions on the forts and communities in Arizona Territory, and the hardships of frontier service, in addition to the exciting and honest accounts of combat. What is most impressive about Bourke’s work is the equal time he gives to both soldier and Native American alike, making "On the Border with Crook" the essential book for those interested in the history of the American frontier. Originally written in 1891, after serving over fifteen years (1870-1886) with General George Crook, Bourke sat down to write this memoir of his hero. He brings to life the frontier, the plains, and the Southwest as well as Native American heroes Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse, and Geronimo. Far more than a first-hand account of Crook's campaigns during the Plains Indian wars and in the Southwest. Alert, curious, and perceptive, Bourke brings to life the whole frontier scene. In crisp descriptions and telling anecdotes he recreates the events and landscapes through which he moved; he sketches sharp action-pictures not only of Crook and his fellow cavalrymen. Perhaps most important, Bourke shows us how General Crook was able to achieve his most remarkable victory—how this man of war won and deserved the trust of the tribes he had subjugated. "Owyhee Cattlemen 1878 1978 100 Years In The Saddle" chronicles the first hundred years of existence for the Owyhee Cattlemen's Association, the oldest such group in Idaho and one of the oldest in the entire United States. Formed in 1878 to protect Owyhee Mountain ranchers against warring Bannock Indians. This book also chronicles the first one hundred years of settlers to the area initially arriving due to the mining boom of the latter 19th century that dominated Idaho Territory. Silver City and Ruby City developed as boom towns. At its height in the 1880s, Owyhee County was among the most populous places in Idaho. Today it is among the least populous, at 1.4 persons per square mile. These two books are in good overall condition, "On The Border..." has a stamped gold gilt illustrated hardcover and gold gilt top edge, bottom edge and fore edge pages and measures 5.75"W x 8.5"L. "Owyhee Cattlemen..." measures 8.5"W x 11.5"L

Litchfield Auctions is honored to offer Selections from the Collection of Peter Tillou. Peter has enjoyed wide renown across the United States and Internationally over his seventy-year career as the consummate dealer-collector. While in college in 1956, Peter was already advertising a pair of fine antique flintlock pistols. By 1960, now a resident of historic Litchfield Connecticut, he was cited by the New York Times as a dealer in "great rarities." With later residences and shops in London, Manhattan, Sun Valley Idaho, and Sanibel Island Florida, Peter continued to consider Litchfield his home. By 2013, Peter was recognized by the Antiques Dealers of America with its highest honor, its Award of Merit,"in recognition of his extensive contributions to the fields of fine art, American decorative arts and antiques."
