- A Red and Black Lacquered Wood Chest
A Red and Black Lacquered Wood Chest of Drawers with Mother of Pearl Inlay, Edo period, Japan, ca. 1830. The box has five shallow drawers with metal hinged pulls and a hinged handle on the top, approx. 8-3/4"W x 5-5/8"D x 8"H. It is embellished with a soft iron red pigment on the exterior and black on the front, underside and back, and within the shaped insets on the sides. There is delicate mother of pearl inlay work on the top, front and sides in varying scenes with clouds, birds, figures, lilly pads, ducks and willow. The side panels have images of bamboo and flowering outcrop. Provenance: purchased from G. T. Marsh & Co., 1970.
