- 19TH C. NATIVE AMERICAN BEAVER TOP HAT
19TH C. NATIVE AMERICAN BEAVER TOP HAT W/ FREEMASONRYNative American, Western United States, Plains Tribes, likely Comanche or Lakota (Sioux), ca. mid to late 19th century CE. This is a fascinating piece of Native American formal wear that combines European fashion with decorative elements added by the wearer. The hat is made from beaver fur with a silk interior - manufactured in Europe with a lion and gold emblem over "Deutsche Mode" (German Fashion). The exterior is adorned with a pink silk ribbon trim and silk yellow tassel on the crown. At the front is a 87.9% silver Masonic order pendant with a square, compass, and a crescent moon in the center. A 88.8% silver brooch, with a rectangular face is pined to the side and suspended from the brooch is a USA half dime minted in 1853, pierced and strung on a cotton cord. A black feather is tucked behind the brooch, completing the handsome hat. Size of hat: 11.125" L x 9" W x 7" H (28.3 cm x 22.9 cm x 17.8 cm); interior brim opening: 7.75" L x 6.75" W (19.7 cm x 17.1 cm); silver quality: 87.9% to 88.8%
Lakota tribal leaders visiting Washington DC to discuss peace treaties were presented with European style clothing and hats from politicians, such as this top hat. The hats were considered too plain and so they were adorned with pieces to represent Native American culture to symbolize identity and leadership. Freemasonry expanded into the western parts of the United States in the mid 19th century and established grand lodges and subordinate lodges, which were powerful groups during pre-statehood periods. Due to the forcible relocation of many tribes to "Indian Territories," Native Americans were the majority memberships in the Masonic lodges in western states such as Oklahoma, and prominent Native Americans were even elected as Grand Masters and created their own Masonic lodges.

Shows age appropriate wear to paint. The latch for the lock has a broken tip, some splitting near nail holes on top. Found in an old Marion home with a collection of diaries, primarily from the Robbins family, Lydia Hammond, Lucian Hammond, and Benjamin Robbins. The diaries span from 1862 to 1917, skipping some years, 20 total diaries. In 1862, Lydia Hammond's diary states, "Dr. Breck of Springfield, sent to assist in the surgical care of the wounded soldiers after the Battle of Pittsburg Landing" (Shiloh). Another entry states "terrible battle, ground was a continuous sea of mortar two feet deep". She also writes that there were "nearly 8,100 buried on the field, and two-thirds were judged to be rebels. Joseph was wounded 3 times, shot 3 times in the leg", and he walked himself to the hospital. One of the last entries states that rebel prisoners were taken to Fort Warren, Nov. 1861. The Mason Slidell incident is mentioned, and they are taken to Fort Warren as prisoners, Nov. 24, 1861. The most important diary is Lucian Hammond's (Carver, MA), 1862. He was a member of Company C, first Battalion, stationed at Fort Warren in 1862. Fort Warren is in Boston Harbor. He talks about guard duty, weather, and taking lessons in artillery tactics. Then he leaves for Washington at Camp Alexander, one half mile from the capital, and he writes about other camps nearby. He then marched and joined McLellan's army 20 miles from Richmond and camped and slept on the ground. In another entry he was given a rifle taken from a rebel in battle. The June 21st entry mentions that it is a wet snowy day, rum is brought in, several soldiers drank too much and they were put in the guard house. The commotion caused such a disturbance that the captain drew his sword and slashed one of the drunken men in the head. In July, he moved South by boat to an unknown location. July 20th he mentions feeling unwell due to dysentery ("diarrhea"), and July 26th was his last entry, it reads "my health poor, have not been on duty for one week". Lydia Hammond mentions in her 1862 diary that they received his remains, and he is recorded as having died. Trunk also contains a letter from Lucian Hammond, April 18, 1862, while stationed at Fort Warren, Boston. There is a pamphlet titled "The Poetic Present", dated 1842, dealing with Creation. There is a partial early 19th c. catechism, a book titled "Select Remains of the Reverend John Mason" 1812, an early 19th c. handwritten recipe book, a 17th or 18th c. book titled "The Dreadful Justice of God in Punishing Sin with Sin". "An Introduction to Spelling and Reading" by Abner Alden, 1824. Also found in the same estate is a soldier's record, 6th Regiment, Company E, Mass. Infantry. It lists all participants. Colored lithograph of a saddened archetypical Lady Liberty holding the Constitution. Shows a 4 1/2" tear to the bottom, a 1" tear at top. Sight size 18 1/2" x 14", overall with modern frame and UV glass 25" x 20".

- Alice Ravenel Huger Smith (American/South
Alice Ravenel Huger Smith (American/South Carolina 1876-1958) "Sunrise" watercolor on artist board signed lower right 21 5/8 in. x 15 3/8 in. framed. Provenance: Succession of Harry T. Howard III. The artist was a cousin of Mr. Howard's mother Elise Mason Smith Howard (1896-1990). Note: A founding member of the Charleston Etchers Club Smith studied the Japanese woodblock collection of a cousin and built on those observations to produce a number of prints before giving up the medium to pursue watercolor full time. It was in this medium that Smith produced her best work combining her study of Japanese art with her observations of the Lowcountry to create flowing tonalist watercolors an excellent example of which is "Sunrise" probably painted on a barrier island near her home.

- Luis Graner y Arrufi (Spanish/American
Luis Graner y Arrufi (Spanish/American 1863-1929 active New Orleans c. 1914-22) "Mistick Krewe of Comus Parade at Night" 1917 oil on canvas signed inscribed and dated "N.O. February 20 1917" lower left 23 3/4 in. x 29 3/4 in. attractively framed. Note: A native of Barcelona Spain Luis Graner y Arrufi studied art in his hometown and in Paris where he exhibited at the Salon. He came to America in 1910 and spent the winters in New Orleans from 1914 to 1922. Already internationally known and exhibited Graner earned acclaim for his landscapes of the Louisiana countryside. Graner excelled at depicting nocturnal scenes a fine example of which is offered here. This exceedingly rare painting of a New Orleans French Quarter Carnival parade depicts the Mistick Krewe of Comus on Mardi Gras night February 20 1917. Organized in 1856 Comus is the oldest Carnival krewe currently in existence in New Orleans. The 1917 theme of the Mistick Krewe of Comus' tableau and parade was "Romantic Legends". The Queen of Comus was Elise Mason Smith and the maids were Marcelle Grima Lise Perrilliat Veva Penick and Mildred Bobb. As remains custom today the identity of Comus was secret. Comprising twenty floats float 15 was "The Dragon of Wantley " which appears to be depicted on the right side of this composition aglow with the light cast from the flambeaux. Graner creates a dramatic impressionistic scene: costumed and masked revelers dance in the foreground while throngs watch the majestic parade. Early paintings of Carnival parades are practically unknown; a specifically dated work which allows identification of its krewe and tableau is exceptionally rare and likely unique among Louisiana paintings. As Henri Schindler poetically writes in his book Mardi Gras: New Orleans (Flammarion 1997): The Mistick Krewe introduced spectacle to the streets of New Orleans and Carnival was forever changed. Comus would not only reappear every Mardi Gras night he would do so amid the flames and smoking flares of moving theater and each year he would present new visions to astonish a population long nourished on masquerades parades and stagecraft. With the advent of the Mistick Krewe of Comus the festivities of Mardi Gras were ended with public ceremony of pomp and bombast with mystery artistry and splendor. (p. 35.)
- Richard Clague (French/New Orleans 1821-1873)
Richard Clague (French/New Orleans 1821-1873) "Louisiana Drilling Rigs" oil on canvas signed lower right 16 1/8 in. x 24 in. in an antique frame. Provenance: Collection of Elise Mason Smith Howard; Succession of Harry T. Howard III New Orleans. Note: The landscape offered here perfectly exemplifies the artistic precepts of Richard Clague. His landscape compositions usually have a "central view" and feature a road or water in the foreground wedging toward a horizontal screen of trees often with a vernacular building and rural figures (people or livestock) below an expanse of sky. Clague's luminist tendencies are exemplified by the vivid blue Louisiana sky streaked with clouds. The handling of light as seen in the reflection on the bayou ties the landscape to the sky above. The marshes in southern Louisiana were sites of salt production by Native peoples for 500 years well in advance of later production by European settlers and American entrepreneurs. The marsh landscape and figure at center wielding a long handled trowel seen here are indicative of an evaporation pool for brine salt production. With brine works and the discovery of a salt dome at Avery Island in 1862 salt production was essential to the Confederate cause; the Avery Island mine produced 10 000 metric tons of rock salt until Union Colonel W.K. Kimball destroyed the mine's infrastructure in 1863. The two towers depicted in this late 19th c. canvas are perhaps the earliest precursor of the technology that would drive Louisiana mineral/oil and gas production decades later. The pipes centering each tower work together to create a siphon extracting underground reservoirs. Oil gas and sulphur drilling occurred on a large scale near Lake Charles Louisiana after 1900 though exploratory wells certainly would have appeared earlier. The scene here is a more modest production than the Avery Island Salt Dome or later oil patches the wells are integrated with agricultural pursuits vine stakes are shown in the field on the left. The scene is significant. A mere "curiosity" would have been presented in sketch form by Clague. This canvas large and meticulously rendered indicates the importance of the site to the artist and his patrons and evidences the importance of mineral production in southern Louisiana after 1850. Thanks to Dr. and Mrs. Jack Holden for their thoughtful examination of this canvas.
