FALIK NOVICK ARTS AND CRAFTS
FALIK NOVICK ARTS AND CRAFTS STERLING CHARGER 18" diameter Novick emigrated from Russia to New York City in 1893 at the age of 15. He had received training in his homeland in the metal arts. While in New York he continued perfecting his trade, but found little success. He decided to relocate, and their is speculative opinion that he crossed paths with Albert Hubbard's Roycrofters'. Falik would settle in Chicago in 1907 and by 1909 he had a small storefront offering his wares. Although he was accomplished in many forms, he excelled at large vessels in brass and copper and large sterling trays. By the time the Kalo Shop was opening, Falik was established. Many of the early copper bowls stamped "Kalo" were actually made by Novick, as well as many sterling trays until his death . His talent was recognized and was approached by the Georg Jensen company to sell his wares under their umbrella as with Alphonse Lapaglia and International. He would continue to be busy and produce wares until his death in 1957. This tray exhibits fine hammer strikes or martele throughout the piece, but is especially pronounced on the raised curved edge of the tray. The monogram is cut from sheet and soldered on, and can be removed if desired. The tray weighs approximately 55.97 troy ounces. Correct signature is on the reverse center.

SILVER KNOBKERRIE CANECa
SILVER KNOBKERRIE CANECa 1880-Ball shaped metal handle covered with a beautifully braided silver wire wrapping and its slim and plain silver collar on a malacca shaft and a long white metal ferrule. The weighty ball is fitted with an equally heavy and long stem walled in the shaft and makes of this cane, in the right trained hands, a redoubtable and devastating disguised weapon. The cane shows the right amount age marks and also possible of violence signs to increase its appeal and not diminish its value and is praised by a grown age patina. Notable is that the initial definition of a knobkerrie, also spelled knobkerry, knobkierie, and knopkierie (Afrikaans), is a form of club used mainly in Southern and Eastern Africa. Typically, they have a large knob at one end and can be used for throwing at animals in hunting or for clubbing an enemy's head. The name was taken over by the English cane terminology and is duplicate of Live-Preserver Cane, Canne Casse-Tête in French or Lebensretter in German. Furthermore, it has the crossover appeal of associating with more than one collecting field to make it a desirable and great collectable. H. 1 ½” x 1 ½”, O.L. 34 ¼”

Note: This commemorative would come to be later known as the "Khodynka Cup of Sorrows" due to the tragic events when half a million people gathered on May 18, 1896 expecting the traditional gifts of food and other items. The rumor that a gold coin was contained in these cups caused a stampede and over one thousand people lost their lives. Provenance: From the Private Collection of Lee Friedman, Atlanta, Georgia.
