- AN UNUSUAL FANCY PIE SAFE WITH HEART
AN UNUSUAL FANCY PIE SAFE WITH HEART AND STAR TINSThe unusually ornate example is topped by a graceful scroll cut upper gallery and raised on an equally exuberant scrolling skirt between the tall, intact and original feet. The case, doors and drawer, as well as the drawer secondary woods, have the characteristics of butternut wood more than walnut. The case is constructed using peg construction with some scattered nails hand forged from iron. The locks are brass. There is a cock beaded trim around the drawer opening. The shelves, back and case bottom are a poplar type softwood, It does not appear this cabinet was ever painted. The finished edges bordering the painted areas show blue paint over the varnished surface.Measures 59.5 x 40 x 15.5 inches.Good condition, displaying characteristics of wear, environment and use commensurate with age, a split at the entire left side of the drawer face, chip to the upper right drawer face, plus the obvious rodent damage.

Seam separation across the top due to shrinkage. Age cracks emanating from rusted nail heads. Top rubbed through to wood with scattered stains, scuffs and a rectangular patch where the top left corner of the door meets the top. Pierced tin plates discolored and oxidized. Door hinges and latch rusted. Pull knob possibly replaced. Fixed shelves with further shrinkage and seam separation. Wood weathered throughout with feet discolored from water damage.
