The people - Greek and English flying officers - were very surprised to see us as the weather had been practically impossible all day; in fact five minutes before we landed an RAF HP machine, securely picketed, had been picked up by the wind and been blown completely on its back, being a nasty mess of wreckage which was spread out in front of us. Needless to say after the buffeting I had received, I was greatly relieved to make our final landing; in fact we were all pleased with ourselves at the successful completion of this long journey, although it had taken longer than we expected. This fact was due to conditions over which neither I nor the mechanics had any control. Altogether, the machine had been out in six whole days' rain. The engines, with the attention they received stood very well "On the day fixed for the inspection by HM King of Greece the Press turned up in copious numbers. We initiated them into the mysteries of the HP and trans-Europe flight. "I did two flights of Press people over Athens, and all went home very pleased with the machine, the new 'sensation' and themselves. On these trips we did some pamphlet dropping over the city. "Saturday, November 1, was a memorable day, for HM King of Greece turned up and inspected the machine. He was greatly impressed, and finally I persuaded him to come up for a flight. Since that occasion His Majesty has had two further flights, the last trip being from Athens to Corinth".

Frank Knox Morton Rehn (American, 1848-1914)
Frank Rehn was a highly successful 19th-century marine painter born in Philadelphia. After finishing his training at the Pennsylvania Academy, he supported himself with portrait commission work and by selling terra cotta plates. He also painted many landscapes and still lifes and won exhibition awards for these subjects. Rehn determined to be exclusively American in his fine art painting, although French Impressionism heavily influenced his style. He is most known for his marine, portrait, and landscape paintings.

Catalogue Note: Colonel Charles Clifton (American, 1853-1928) was a major figure in shaping the automotive industry during its first decades. In 1897, he joined the George N. Pierce company - at that time a bicycle wheel manufacturer - and stayed on when it was reorganized as the Pierce-Arrow Motor Company, becoming chairman of the company’s board of directors in 1916. Clifton was also the founding president of the National Automotive Chamber of Commerce.
Clifton joined the Albright Art Gallery Board in 1914, serving initially on the finance committee before becoming vice president and then president, a role he held from 1918 until his death in 1928. In addition to his dedication to the Buffalo AKG, Clifton also served as president of Buffalo General Hospital, and during World War I, he was president of the Allied War Relief and of the Fatherless Children of France. In recognition of his support, especially for children orphaned by the war, Clifton was made a Chevalier of the Legion of Honor by the French government.

Sir Thomas Lawrence was an English portrait painter and the fourth president of the Royal Academy. Self-taught, he was a brilliant draughtsman and known for his gift of capturing a likeness, as well as his virtuoso handling of paint. Lawrence was also a collector and formed one of the finest collections of Old Master drawings ever known. His first royal commission was from Queen Charlotte, whose portrait he painted in 1789.
