PORTRAIT, POSSIBLY JENNY LIND OR
PORTRAIT, POSSIBLY JENNY LIND OR FANNY MENDELSSOHNLarge mid 19th century oil on canvas full length portrait of a woman wearing a black mourning dress, possibly Jenny Lind (1820-1887) or Fanny Mendelssohn (1805-1847). The subject holds sheet music titled "Auf Flugeln des Gesanges," (On Wings of Song), a melody written in 1834 by composer Felix Mendelssohn (with whom Lind reputedly had a love affair; Medelssohn died in 1847, and Lind, who married Otto Goldschmitt in 1852, continued to perform the song). Unsigned. 59" H x 49 1/2" W sight, 67" x 54" framed. Later laurel-molded giltwood frame. Note: while this portrait carries an oral history of portraying Lind, a famous singer of her day who frequently performed this song, the subject could also be Mendelssohn's sister Fanny, a composer in her own right, who was married to a painter, Wilhelm Hensel. It was reportedly sold through C.G. Sloan Auctioneers in Washington, DC in the early 20th century with an attribution to painter Anna Massey Lea Merritt (1844-1930). TN DISTILLERY ADVERTISING & JENNY
TN DISTILLERY ADVERTISING & JENNY LIND TICKET1st item: Framed ticket to Jenny Lind's Wednesday, April 2, 1851 performance in Nashville. The printed ticket, with handwritten number 945, has facsimile signature for tour manager P.T. Barnum and allows entry to the world famous Swedish soprano's second concert in Nashville. Housed in a decorative frame with fabric flowers, 6" H x 4" W. Lind toured the United States in 1850-1852, to great acclaim. Tickets were in such great demand that Barnum sold them in auctions (with admission charged just to get into the auctions) - a marketing ploy that is said to have upset Lind. 2nd item: Rare 1895 "Children from Many Lands" Advertising Calendar for the Greenbrier Distillery, Nashville, Tennessee, published by Raphael Tuck. Includes 12 pages for all months in the year, joined by a metal hanger at top (some pages have become detached). 12 1/2" H x 9" W. 3rd item: assorted grouping of ephemera: two boards for the Green Brier Distillery 1904 "Dream Faces" Advertising Calendar (covers June through December, no internal pages); plus some internal pages from incomplete calendars of the same era published by the Equitable Assurance and John D. Anderson Companies of Nashville, a scrapbook of a few other unrelated images, and 2 Campfire Girls sheet music songs including Mammy Moon and Mystic Fire. Provenance: the estate of Sarah Hunter Hicks Green, formerly of Historic Devon Farm, Nashville, Tennessee. (Higher-resolution photos are available at www.caseantiques.com)
Condition:
1895 calendar has toning, grime and chipped corners/edges to January cover page, but other pages are in good condition; some have come detached from metal hanging ring. 1904 Dream Faces calendar has 7" loss to left lower corners and losses to upper corners on both pieces. Other prints have grime, toning and scattered chipping.

Provenance: Collection of James A. Helzer (1946-2008), Founder of Unicover Corporation.
This painting was originally published on the Fleetwood First Day Cover for the U.S. 32c Jenny Classic Collection Series stamp issued July 19, 1997.
The end of World War I made thousands of war-surplus airplanes available at bargain prices -- and there were just as many war-trained pilots who wanted to continue flying. At San Diego's Rockwell Field, in 1919, a permanent forest fire patrol was established, equipped with surplus Curtiss Jennies. During the 1920s, the reliable biplane was also a favorite of barnstormers. These daring pilots flew around the country giving stunt flying exhibitions at county fairs and carnivals. In 1924 the Curtiss Exhibition Company flew 100,000 miles -- much of it in Jennies -- conducting aerial photography, carrying passengers, making deliveries and instructing new pilots.
