WILLIAM H. D. KOERNER
WILLIAM H. D. KOERNER (1878-1938)Remington Arms Illustration, 1914
signed and dated "W H D Koerner 1914" lower left
oil on canvas, 37 by 24 in.
Born in Germany, Koerner moved to Iowa with his family when he was three years old. At twenty, he began his artistic career as an illustrator for the "Chicago Tribune." He attended the Art Institute of Chicago before moving with his wife to New York City and enrolling in the Art Students League. Koerner then completed his formal education in Delaware with famed illustrator Howard Pyle (1853-1983), whose other students included N. C. Wyeth (1882-1945), Philip R. Goodwin (1882-1935), and William Harnden Foster (1886-1941). Koerner's artwork can be found in museums across the country, including the American Museum of Western Art in Denver and the Whitney Western Art Museum in Cody, Wyoming, where his studio is replicated.
This charming painting was an important illustration for the Remington Arms Company, one of the oldest gun manufacturers in the country, founded in 1816. In it, a hunter and his setter companion take a water break with a friend, showing off the Remington-made pump-action shotgun and shells. Koerner captures the generous camaraderie among sportsmen as the image centers on the pair of shells and gun.
This lot includes the original oil painting, a reproduction tin of the same image, and a poster celebrating the 100th anniversary of the Remington shotgun from 2008.
Provenance: Private Collection, New Jersey

KLATT BROTHERS CIRCUSA unique and
KLATT BROTHERS CIRCUSA unique and important folk art circus "train" complete with exotic animals, wagon drivers, and painted circus wagons with hitched horse teams. The animals are carved with dignity and grace, and painted in dry colours while the wagons are detailed with ladders, scalloped sides, wire bars and decorated with scrolled pin striping. The Klatt Bros. Circus was carved and built by Hubert Klatt (1917-1997) and Joe Klatt (1913-2003) of Pembroke, Ontario when they were teenagers. Upon completion of the circus the industrious brothers took it to Callander, Ontario, where the Dionne quintuplets were attracting large crowds, and charged 25 cents to view their circus. Later, Hubert continued a carving career based in Pembroke while Joe took on various janitorial jobs in the area while carving for his own enjoyment. The wagons and animals offered were acquired at auction from the Estate of Joe Klatt and subsequently displayed in the 100th anniversary celebration of the Pembroke Museum. The Klatt Brothers Circus is also partially illustrated in Canadian Folk Art to 1950 by John Fleming and Michael Rowan, page 274. In total the offering includes four wagons, three four-horse teams, drivers, as well as eleven animals including elephants, tigers, polar bears, monkeys and a single camel and zebra, all in original paint and very good condition. SIR HENRY DOULTON (DOUBLE HANDLE)
SIR HENRY DOULTON (DOUBLE HANDLE) D7054 - LARGE - ROYAL...Sir Henry Doulton (Double Handle) in blue, black, yellow and brown coloration.
In the mid 1830's, Henry Doulton (1820 - 1897) joined his father's firm just in time to capitalize on the expanding market that was developing in London for modern sanitation products. The manufacturer of stoneware sewer and water pipes led Doulton and Company, as they were known after 1854, to became a large and flourishing concern. John Doulton retired around this time leaving Doulton and Company in the hands of his son Henry. In the 1860's, with decorative wares expanding, Henry Doulton was persuaded to hire students from the Lambeth School of Art as designers and decorators of the new ornamental wares his company was introducing. Their outstanding creations heralded the beginning of the studio-art movement. This large size two-handled jug was issued to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the death of Sir Henry Dolton in 1897. This jug carries a special backstamp for the centenary year and was issued in limited edition of 1,997.
