- 1898 ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH CO. POCKET
1898 ELGIN NATIONAL WATCH CO. POCKET WATCH & CASEFor your consideration is this 1898 Elgin National Watch Company pocket watch set in a Crescent Watch Case Company nickel alloy case. In 1864, the Elgin National Watch Company was established in Elgin, Illinois, as an American watch manufacturer. The business was renowned for its innovation and accuracy, using cutting-edge manufacturing processes to create dependable timepieces. Initially, Elgin concentrated on making pocket watches because they were in high demand. Elgin watches were created in a variety of looks and patterns to suit different tastes and preferences. Elgin increased its operations and started making wristwatches as the demand for them increased in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Sadly, in 1968 the Elgin National Watch Company stopped making watches, and in 1969 it was formally dissolved. The serial number inscribed alongside the movement is numbered, "7131098" indicating it was made in 1898. The pocket watch is a grade 180, 17 jewels of ruby, size 18s, model 7, variation B. W. Raymond and features a nickel movement finish, a full plate and a double skunk dial type. The watch is railroad graded. The watch is set in a nickel alloy Crescent Watch Case Company case. The serial number on the case reads, "73211" and reads "Pat. Apr. 17, 78 / Trade Mark". The watch does not tick and can not be wound. The watch shows good condition overall with the white watch face being cracked at the bottom, but no other signs of obvious damage are present. The watch measures 2 5/16" in diameter and 3" in height. The watch weighs 140.8 grams.

- EARLY 20TH C. MOROCCAN BERBER POTTERY
EARLY 20TH C. MOROCCAN BERBER POTTERY MUGMorocco, Berber / Amazigh, ca. 1900 CE. This is a prettily decorated pottery vessel that looks like a large coffee mug with the handle intact. Size: 4.5" L x 5.75" W x 4.25" H (11.4 cm x 14.6 cm x 10.8 cm)
Unglazed ceramics from Morocco are usually made in the Rif area of mountainous central Morocco. The production of ceramics is primarily women's industry, and the women who make the pots decorate them with natural paint from plants such as henna. They make the pots without a potter's wheel, instead using a wooden spatula to change the thickness of the walls and a leather strip for polishing the outer walls. Some art historians theorize that the geometric designs on Berber pots originated with the classical and medieval period traders of the Mediterranean and Sahara.

Other Notes: This pendant watch is a striking example from the series of Louis XV – XVI revival watch covers designed by Paulding Farnham for Tiffany & Company's exhibit at the 1893 World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago. The Exposition, which celebrated the 400th anniversary of Christopher Columbus's arrival in the New World, was one of the famed World's Fairs of the late 19th/early 20th century. These expositions were an international stage for leading designers and luxury retailers to introduce their creations to the world, and only the best of the best was put on display. Paulding Farnham was one of Tiffany's top designers, metallurgists, and enamellists during this era. His style and skill are embodied by this series of watch covers, which were embellished with colorful guilloche enamel with flora and fauna themed gold overlay inset with diamonds and colored stones. These intricate pieces were widely celebrated, and Tiffany & Company won a medal for Farnham's finely designed watch cases at the 1893 Chicago Fair. Condition:

According Banff Art Gallery, Drahanchuk was oriented to an honest expression of the natural world. He used glazes as ‘accents to good design only where function demands.' Whether making a studio piece or a commissioned mural, Drahanchuk imbued his work with a distinctive surface energy and muscularlity, hallmarks that make it instantly recognizable. He worked in stoneware and experimented with relief decoration and wax emulsion, which provided a fine sensitive line in his work. Ed Drahanchuk ran a successful independent studio practice (Design Associates, est. 1963) in cooperation with his wife, Ethel, and architectural sculptor Bob Oldrich. They began the studio in Calgary, moved to Bragg Creek and then in 1975 moved to British Columbia. The studio is still in operation. Over the years the Studio benefitted from involvement with Government sponsored trade shows in various parts of the world, which led to purchases from Canadian embassies and government buildings as well as ceramic orders from Europe and Japan. In 1974 Drahanchuk received the “Canadian Design of Merit Citation, Craft Award' from the National Design Council. Drahanchuk was born in Calgary and graduated from the Provincial Institute of Technology & Art (now Alberta College of Art & Design), where he had studied under his older brother, Walter Drohan RCA (1932-2007), in a department heavily influenced by its first instructor, Luke Lindoe RCA (1913-2000).
