MASSIVE ARCHAIC EASTERN WOODLAND
MASSIVE ARCHAIC EASTERN WOODLAND STONE FULL GROOVE AXENative American, southeastern United States, western North Carolina, Caney Fork Township, Eastern Woodland, Late Archaic period, ca. 2000 to 1000 BCE. An impressive axe head of a massive, rectangular form, hand-pecked from a hefty, mica-rich gray stone with caramel and butterscotch-hued inclusions. A deep groove encircles the entire circumference of the head flanked by a pair of broad, raised bands, hence the type "full groove" axe, which enabled the stone to be hafted to a wooden pole with cords. The wide, flat butt gently tapers to the slightly curved bit, which displays some chips and nicks suggestive of use. However, this hefty head must have required great strength to wield as tool, and may have only served a ceremonial function as the mottled stone is inherently beautiful with the shimmering mica flecks! Size: 9.2" L x 7" W (23.4 cm x 17.8 cm)
This remarkable implement was found in western North Carolina near Judaculla Rock, which is a curvilinear-shaped outcrop of soapstone containing more petroglyphs than any known boulder east of the Mississippi River. Dating to the Late Archaic period, Judaculla Rock contains approximately 1,548 incised motifs.
