MID 19TH CENTURY 12 BORE MUZZLE LOADING SHOTGUN 49 " long A typical European export of the 19th century. Double trigger, straight grip walnut stock with wrist crack. Suffers from rib separation at the muzzle. broken hammer spur, broken rear trigger, missing ramrod and the bores are rather corroded. Best relegated to the space above the fireplace.

BELGIAN DOUBLE BARREL PERCUSSION LOCK SHOTGUN, 12 BORE A finely made double-barrel, percussion-lock shotgun bearing proof marks from the Belgian proofing house at Liege. The rib between the barrels is engraved "Laminated Steel" near the chambers and marked with the serial number "1319" on the right barrel underneath the handguard. The barrels are mounted to dark wood stock with fine checkering on the grip and handguard. Both lock plates, the hammers and the trigger guard have decorative floral engravings. The original ram rod is missing and has been replaced with a round stick of ash. The firearm is in overall fair condition aesthetically with some minor aesthetic issues as well as some more significant damage (See condition notes). The gun appears to be in overall fine mechanical condition with good sear engagement and smooth hammer travel. OAL: 46", BBL: 30", LoP: 14", Caliber: 12 Bore Black Powder, Shot only.

Rib is marked "WM Moore & Co. London Fine Twist". Circa 1870 based on Birmingham proof marks. Cbered for 12 gauge shell, 13 marked on barrels. Serial number 3324. Approx. 47 1/4" overall, 15" LOP. Stock is cracked and there is separation between the receiver and stock. Left barrel has dent in the muzzle rim. Bores have some scattered pitting. Some of the hardware has been replaced. A 12 bore pin fire underlever double barrel sporting gun by Jackson of Nottingham foliate engraved fitted with damascus ribbon twist barrels Estimate ?100-150 Wood surface with general light scratches and scuffs consistent with age metal plates to the back of the butt heavily tarnished and scratches barrels lightly tarnished throughout but this appears to have had a light cleaning at some point in its history it is named in the groove between the two barrels but this has rubbed clearly named on the side the lockplate on both sides and numbered on the underside the stop behind the trigger guard no.1673? although this is heavily worn both hammers cock and release quite happily it appears that the entire gun has been cleaned within the past 5 years and somewhat rubbed in parts. Overall appearance ok. Descriptions provided in both printed and on-line catalogue formats do not include condition reports. Appears to be a F-35 or 40; sleeved barrels with game rib; case-hardened Facile Princeps boxlock action heavily engraved with fine foliate scroll with floral details beaded fences hold open feature crossbolt side safety ejectors; finely checkered straight stock of figured walnut with 5/8'' horn extension vacant silver oval and finely-checkered forend with horn tip. choked: L-Improved/Modified R-Improved/Cylinder chambered: 2 1/2'' LOP: 14 1/4'' barrel: L28''overall: L44 1/2'' Other Notes: William Wellington Greener was the second of four sons born to William Greener gunmaker 1806-1869. In 1864 W.W. Greener patented and started to manufacture an under-lever pin-fire half-cocking breech loader and in 1869 he patented a self-acting striker and protection was sought for an over/under gun with laterally opening barrels. In 1890 he claimed that his factory which fronted on St. Mary's Row and had spread along Loveday Street to Bath Street was the largest in Britain and by 1923 the firm of W.W. Greener Ltd. was to claim that the factory was the largest sporting gun factory in the world. The business continues today under the propriortorship of his descendants. Good condition. Bluing 90% + minor mark on left barrel 4'' from muzzle some pitting under fore-end loose on face. They worked for their father and when he sold the business to Midland Gun Co. in 1902 they opened their own gunmaking business under the name of Holloway & Sons at the Imperial Works Vesey Street trading from 1914 as George & S Holloway but in 1916 Sidney Holloway died. After WWII the firm was a trade supplier principally of barreled actions and component parts for other gun retailers and makers. The name changed to G & S HOLLOWAY in 1923. The firm continued to trade and remained in family ownership until the 1990s.
