FRENCH GILT-BRONZE-MOUNTED ROUGE

Note: The above offered lot is referred to as the "Luxor" Obelisk which currently stands in Paris on the Place de la Concorde. This obelisk was one of a pair which stood guarding the portal at the Luxor Temple in Egypt during the reign of Ramesses II. The left hand obelisk remains in its original location. The pair of Luxor obelisks were originally carved of yellow granite and are inscribed with hieroglyphics in honor of the Pharaoh Ramesses II. Ramesses II (1279-1213) was the third Pharaoh of the 19th dynasty.
The Parisian obelisk arrived in Paris on December 21, 1833, having been shipped from Luxor via Alexandria and Cherbourg. Three years later on October 25, 1836 it was installed on the Place de la Concorde by King Louis Philippe. It had been given to France by Muhammad Ali Pasha, ruler of Ottoman Egypt in exchange for a French mechanical clock. After the exchange the clock was found to be faulty, having probably been damaged during transport. The clock is still installed in a clock tower at the Cairo Citadel and is currently not working.

The marble base with very small nicks. Not withstanding this report or any discussion concerning condition of a lot, all lots are offered and sold "as is" in accordance with our conditions of sale.

CARVED RAMSES II TOE FRAGMENT
CARVED RAMSES II TOE FRAGMENT Silver Mounted Pink Granite Toenail Fragment, purportedly from one of the colossal statues of Pharoah Ramses II (reigned ca. 1279-1213 BC) at the entrance to the Temple of Luxor (Luxor, Egypt); collected by photographer, author and adventurer Sigmund Krausz in 1899, who took possession of this piece because of a concern that it would otherwise be lost forever. Krausz brought the fragment to Europe and had it mounted in silver with the engraved notation: "Small toenail from colossal Statue of Ramses II. Temple of Luxor, Feb. 13th, 1899"; 2 1/2" high, 4 1/2" x 3 1/2"; Accompanied by a framed and notarized statement made in Chicago in 1919, from Krausz describing his acquisition of this piece, OS: 12" x 9".
Sigmund Krausz was made famous by his documentary photos released as "Street Types of Chicago" in 1892, the first publication of its kind. He also wrote "The Autocar Automobile Directory" and as record of his time overseas "Towards the Rising Sun, a Story of Travel & Adventure", published by Laird & Lee in Chicago, 1903. This recounted his travels parts to Greece and Asia Minor, Egypt and India.
