George Washington ran or supported many a Virginia lottery. Their use is similar to ours today but in the 19th century several were fraudulent and lotteries were banned until early in the 20th century These four are from 1) Princeton and Newton - The holder of this ticket was entitled to the prize as passed by the legislature in Perth-Amboy June 1790 - signed by John Beatty in red ink, indented and printed like the colonial currency that was worthless by 1890, 2 & 3) Somerset 2 consecutive tickets (5295 and 5296) signed by Colonel Peter Dumont Vroom who fought in the Revolution and was a Somerset Assemblyman. His son later became the 9th Governor of New Jersey, 4) Patterson - This lottery was for the Society of Establishing Useful Manufactures; All four tickets were subject to a 15% deduction
